Guru Sakshat Parabrahma, Tasmai Shri Gurave Namah॥
The sacred scripture Shri Guru Charitra holds great importance in the Datta Sampradaya. Revered on par with the Vedas, it narrates the divine life of Shri Narasimha Saraswati, a 14th-century incarnation of Lord Dattatreya. It was compiled in the 15th century by Shri Saraswati Gangadhar.
Guru Purnima, which falls on Thursday, 10 July 2025, is a spiritually significant day. Many devotees undertake a 7-day Parayan (reading) of Shri Guru Charitra during this time. To conclude the Parayan on Guru Purnima, one must begin on Friday, 4 July 2025.
What is Shri Guru Charitra?
The scripture contains 52 chapters (some versions have 53) and about 7,491 verses, divided into three parts:
- Jnana Kand (Knowledge)
- Karma Kand (Action)
- Bhakti Kand (Devotion)
It offers deep spiritual guidance through stories, rituals, and the lives of Shri Sripada Srivallabha and Shri Narasimha Saraswati.
