The Shri Guru Charitra is a timeless spiritual masterpiece written by the 16th-century saint Saraswati Gangadhar. This ninth chapter is a significant milestone in the life of Shripad Shri Vallabha (the first avatar of Lord Dattatreya).

Ovi 1 Original: ऐकोनि सिद्धाचे वचन । नामधारक करी नमन । विनवीत कर जोडून । भक्तिभावे करोनिया ॥१॥
Transliteration: Aikoni Siddhache vachan | Namadharaka kari naman | Vinaveeta kara joduna | Bhaktibhave karoniya || 1 ||
Meaning: Upon hearing the words of the Siddha, Namadharaka bowed down. With folded hands and deep devotion, he made a humble request.

Transliteration: Shripada Kuravapuri asata | Pudhe vartali kaisi katha | Vistaruni sanga aata | Krupamurti datara || 2 ||
Meaning: "O Merciful Giver, tell me in detail what events unfolded while Shripad Shri Vallabha resided in Kuravapur," he asked.

Transliteration: Siddha mhane Namadharaka | Pudhe katha apurva dekha | Taya grami rajaka eka | Sevaka jhala Shri-Gurucha || 3 ||
Meaning: Siddha replied, "Listen Namadharaka, a marvelous story took place. In that village, there lived a washerman (Rajaka) who became a dedicated servant of Shri Guru."

Meaning: Lord Shri Guru, who is affectionate towards His devotees, understood the disciple's devotion and began narrating the expanded Guru Charitra to inspire faith.

Transliteration: Nitya Shripada Gangesi yeti | Vidhipurvaka snana kariti | Lokavevhara sampaditi | Trayamurti apana || 5 ||
Meaning: Every day, Shripad would come to the river (Krishna) and perform ritual baths. Although He is the Trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh) Himself, He acted like a common man to set an example.

Transliteration: Jyache darshana Ganga-snana | Tyasi kayase acharana | Lokanugraha-karana | Snana karita pariyesa || 6 ||
Meaning: For someone whose mere sight (Darshan) is equivalent to bathing in the holy Ganges, what need is there for rituals? He bathed only to bestow grace upon the people.
Ovi 7 Original: वर्तता ऐसे एके दिवशी । श्रीपाद यति येती स्नानासी । गंगा वहात असे दशदिशी । मध्ये असती आपण ॥७॥
Transliteration: Vartata aise eke divashi | Shripada yati yeti snanasi | Ganga vahata ase dashadishi | Madhye asati apana || 7 ||
Meaning: One day, while things were going on this way, Shripad Yati came for His bath. The river flowed in all directions, and He stood in its midst.

Transliteration: Taya Ganga-tatakanta | Rajaka ase vastre dhuta | Nitya yeuni ase namita | Shripada-Gurumurtisi || 8 ||
Meaning: On the banks of that river, the washerman was washing clothes. Every day, he would come and bow to the divine form of Shripad Shri Guru.

Transliteration: Nitya trikala yevoniya | Dandapramana karoniya | Namana kari ativinaya | Manovakkayakarme || 9 ||
Meaning: He would come three times a day, offer prostrations (Dandavat), and bow with extreme humility through his mind, speech, and actions.

Transliteration: Vartata aise eke divashi | Aala rajaka namaskarasi | Shripada mhanati tayasi | Ekachitte pariyesa || 10 ||
Meaning: One day, when the washerman came to bow, Shripad spoke to him. Listen carefully to what He said.

Transliteration: Shripada mhanati rajakasi | Ka nitya kashtatosi | Tushtalo mi tujhya bhaktisi | Sukhe rajya kari aata || 11 ||
Meaning: Shripad said to the washerman, "Why do you toil every day? I am pleased with your devotion. Now, go and rule a kingdom in happiness."

Transliteration: Aikata Guruche vachana | Gathi bandhi pallavi shakuna | Vinaveetase kara joduna | Satyasankalpa Gurumurti || 12 ||
Meaning: Hearing the Guru’s words, he took it as a divine omen. He folded his hands and made a request to the Guru, whose resolutions always come true.

Transliteration: Rajaka sandi samsara-chinta | Sevaka jahala ekachitta | Duroni kari dandavata | Matha geliya yenechi pari || 13 ||
Meaning: The washerman cast aside all worldly worries and became a single-minded servant. Even when the Guru was at the monastery, he would offer prostrations from a distance.

Transliteration: Aise bahuta divasanvari | Rajaka to seva kari | Aangana jhadi prokshi vari | Nitya neme yene vidhi || 14 ||
Meaning: For many days, the washerman continued his service. He would regularly sweep the courtyard and sprinkle water as a daily ritual.
Ovi 15 Original: असता एके दिवशी देखा । वसंतऋतु वैशाखा । क्रीडा करीत नदीतटाका । आला राजा म्लेछ एक ॥१५॥
Transliteration: Asata eke divashi dekha | Vasantarutu Vaishakha | Krida karita naditataka | Aala raja mlecha eka || 15 ||
Meaning: One day, during the spring month of Vaishakha, a foreign king (Yavana/Mlechha) arrived at the riverbank for leisure.

Transliteration: Striyamsahita raja apana | Alankruta abharana | Krida karita striya apana | Gangemadhuna yetase || 16 ||
Meaning: The king arrived with his queens, adorned in jewels and ornaments. He was enjoying water sports with them in the river.

Transliteration: Sarva dala yeta doni thadi | Amita asati hasti ghodi | Miravitati ratnakodi | Alankruta sevakajana || 17 ||
Meaning: His vast army arrived on both banks with countless elephants and horses. The servants were adorned with heaps of precious gems.

Transliteration: Aisa Gangechya pravahata | Raja aala khelata | Aneka vadyanada garjata | Krishna-veni thadiyesi || 18 ||
Meaning: Thus, the king came playing in the river's current. The sound of various musical instruments echoed on the banks of the Krishna River.

Meaning: While the washerman was bowing to the Guru, the noise distracted him. He began watching the grand royal procession in the river.

Transliteration: Smaya kari bahu manasi | Janmoniya samsarasi | Jari na dekhije saukhyasi | Pashusamana deha apula || 20 ||
Meaning: He felt great wonder in his heart. He thought, "If one takes birth in this world and does not experience such happiness, then one's body is as useless as an animal's."
Ovi 21 Original: धन्य राजयाचे जिणे । ऐसे सौख्य भोगणे । स्त्रिया वस्त्रे अनेक भूषणे । कैसा भक्त ईश्वराच ॥२१॥
Transliteration: Dhanya rajayache jine | Aise saukhya bhogane | Striya vastre aneka bhushane | Kaisa bhakta Ishvaracha || 21 ||
Meaning: "Blessed is the life of this king who enjoys such luxury—wives, fine clothes, and many ornaments. What kind of devotee of God must he be?"
Ovi 22 Original: कैसे याचे आर्जव फळले । कवण्या देवा आराधिले । कैसे श्रीगुरु असती भेटले । मग पावला ऐसी दशा ॥ २२॥
Transliteration: Kaise yache arjava phalale | Kavanya deva aradhile | Kaise Shri-Guru asati bhetale | Maga pavala aisi dasha || 22 ||
Meaning: "How did his efforts bear fruit? Which deity did he worship? Which Guru did he meet to achieve this grand state?"
Ovi 23 Original: ऐसे मनी चिंतित । करीतसे दंडवत । श्रीपादराय कृपावंत । वळखिली वासना तयाची ॥२३॥
Transliteration: Aise mani chintita | Karitase dandavata | Shripadaraya krupavanta | Valakhili vasana tayachi || 23 ||
Meaning: As he offered prostrations with these thoughts in his mind, the merciful Shripad Maharaja recognized his inner desire (for royalty).

Transliteration: Bhaktavatsala Shri-Gurumurti | Janoni antari tyachi sthiti | Bolavuniya pusati | Kaya chintisi mananta || 24 ||
Meaning: Knowing his internal state, the affectionate Shri Guru called him and asked, "What are you thinking about in your mind?"

Transliteration: Rajaka mhane Svamisi | Dekhile drushti rayasi | Santosha jhala manasi | Kevala dasa Shri-Gurucha || 25 ||
Meaning: The washerman said to the Swami, "I saw the king with my own eyes. My heart felt joy, thinking he must be a servant of Shri Guru."
Ovi 26 Original: पूर्वी आराधोनि देवासी । पावला आता या पदासी । म्हणोनि चिंतितो मानसि । कृपासिंधु दातारा ॥२६॥
Transliteration: Purvi aradhoni devasi | Pavala aata ya padasi | Mhanoni chintito manasi | Krupasindhu datara || 26 ||
Meaning: "I was wondering which deity he worshipped in the past to reach this position, O Giver, Ocean of Mercy!"
Ovi 27 Original: ऐसे अविद्यासंबंधेसी । नाना वासना इंद्रियांसी । चाड नाही या भोगासी । चरणी तुझे मज सौख्य ॥२७॥
Transliteration: Aise avidyasambhendesi | Nana vasana indriyansi | Chada nahi ya bhogasi | Charani tujhe maja saukhya || 27 ||
Meaning: "Due to ignorance, the senses develop various desires. I do not crave these enjoyments; my only happiness lies at Your feet."

Transliteration: Shripada mhanati rajakasi | Janmadarabha kashtalasi | Vancha ase bhogavayasi | Rajyabhoga tamovrutti || 28 ||
Meaning: Shripad said to him, "You have struggled since birth. There is a hidden desire in you to enjoy royal pleasures, which are of a 'Tamasic' nature."

Transliteration: Nivavi indriye sakala | Natari moksha navhe nirmala | Badha kariti pudhe kevala | Janmantari pariyesi || 29 ||
Meaning: "Satisfy your senses first; otherwise, you will not attain pure liberation. These unfulfilled desires will surely trouble you in future births."
Ovi 30 Original: तुष्टवावया इंद्रियांसी । तुवा जावे म्लेछवंशासी । आवडी जाहली तुझे मानसी । राज्य भोगी जाय त्वरित ॥३०॥
Transliteration: Tushtavavaya indriyansi | Tuva jave mlechavamshasi | Avadi jahali tujhe manasi | Rajya bhogi jaya tvarita || 30 ||
Meaning: "To satisfy your senses, you must be born in a royal family of the Mlechhas. Since your heart desires it, go and enjoy a kingdom soon."
Ovi 31 Original: ऐकोनि स्वांमीचे वचन । विनवी रजक कर जोडून । कृपासागरू तू गुरुराज पूर्ण । उपेक्षू नको म्हणतसे ॥३१ ॥
Transliteration: Aikoni Svamiche vachana | Vinavi rajaka kara joduna | Krupasagaru tu Gururaja purna | Upekshu nako mhanatase || 31 ||
Meaning: Hearing the Master's words, the washerman pleaded with folded hands, "You are the Ocean of Mercy and the Perfect Guru. Do not neglect me!"
Ovi 32 Original: अंतरतील तुझे चरण । द्यावे माते पुनर्दर्शन । तुझा अनुग्रह असे कारण । ज्ञान द्यावे दातारा ॥३२॥
Transliteration: Antaratila tujhe charana | Dyave mate punardarshana | Tujha anugraha ase karana | Jnana dyave datara || 32 ||
Meaning: "I will be separated from Your feet, so please grant me Your vision again. Let Your grace be the reason for me to receive divine knowledge, O Giver!"
Ovi 33 Original: श्रीगुरु म्हणती तयासी । वैदुरानगरी जन्म घेसी । भेटी देऊ अंतकाळासी । कारण असे येणे आम्हा ॥३३॥
Transliteration: Shri-Guru mhanati tayasi | Vaiduranagari janma ghesi | Bheti deu antakalasi | Karana ase yene amha || 33 ||
Meaning: Shri Guru said to him, "You will be born in the city of Vaidura. I will meet you during your last moments, as I have a purpose to fulfill there."
Ovi 34 Original: भेटी होतांचि आम्हांसी । ज्ञान होल तुझे मानसी । न करी चिंता भरवसी । आम्हा येणे घडेल ॥३४॥
Transliteration: Bheti hotanchi amhansi | Jnana hoela tujhe manasi | Na kari chinta bharavasi | Amha yene ghadela || 34 ||
Meaning: "As soon as we meet, knowledge will dawn in your heart. Have no worry; our meeting will definitely take place."
Ovi 35 Original: आणिक कार्यकारणासी । अवतार घेऊ परियेसी । वेष धरोनि संन्यासी । नाम नृसिंहसरस्वती ॥३५॥
Transliteration: Aanika karyakaranasi | Avatara gheu pariyesi | Vesha dharoni sanyasi | Nama Nrsimhasarasvati || 35 ||
Meaning: "For another divine purpose, I shall take a new incarnation. I will appear as a Sanyasi (monk) named 'Narasimha Saraswati'."
Ovi 36 Original: ऐसे तया संबोधूनि । निरोप देती जाय म्हणोनि । रजक लागला तये चरणी । नमस्कारीत तये वेळी ॥३६॥
Transliteration: Aise taya sambodhuni | Niropa deti jaya mhanoni | Rajaka lagala taye charani | Namaskarita taye veli || 36 ||
Meaning: Thus consoling him, He gave him leave to go. At that moment, the washerman fell at His feet and bowed.
Ovi 37 Original: देखोनि श्रीगुरु कृपामूर्ति । रजकासी जवळी पाचारिती । इह भोगिसी की पुढती । राज्यभोग सांग मज ॥३७॥
Transliteration: Dekhoni Shri-Guru krupamurti | Rajakasi javali pacharithi | Iha bhogisi ki pudhati | Rajyabhoga sanga maja || 37 ||
Meaning: Seeing his devotion, the merciful Guru called the washerman close and asked, "Tell me, do you wish to enjoy this royal power in this life or the next?"
Ovi 38 Original: रजक विनवीत श्रीपादासी । झालो आपण वृद्धवयेसी । भोग भोगीन बाळाभ्यासी । यौवनगोड राज्यभोग ॥३८॥
Transliteration: Rajaka vinaveeta Shripadasi | Jhalo apana vruddhavayesi | Bhoga bhogina balabhyasi | Yauvanagoda rajyabhoga || 38 ||
Meaning: He replied to Shripad, "I have now grown old. I wish to enjoy the sweet pleasures of kingship during my youth in the next birth."
Ovi 39 Original: ऐकोनि रजकाचे वचन । निरोप देती श्रीगुरु आपण । त्वरित जाई रे म्हणोन । जन्मांतरी भोगी म्हणती ॥३९॥
Transliteration: Aikoni rajakache vachana | Niropa deti Shri-Guru apana | Tvarita jai re mhanona | Janmantari bhogi mhanati || 39 ||
Meaning: Hearing this, Shri Guru gave him permission and told him to go quickly and enjoy his pleasures in the next birth.
Ovi 40 Original: निरोप देता तया वेळी । त्यजिला प्राण तत्काळी । जन्माता झाला म्लेछकुळी । वैदुरानगरी विख्यात ॥४०॥
Transliteration: Niropa deta taya veli | Tyajila prana tatkali | Janmata jhala mlechakuli | Vaiduranagari vikhyata || 40 ||
Meaning: Upon receiving the Guru's blessing, he gave up his life immediately. He was then born into a prominent royal family of the Mlechhas in the city of Vaidura.
Ovi 41 Original: ऐसी रजकाची कथा । पुढे सांगून विस्तारता । सिद्ध म्हणे नामधारका आता । चरित्र पुढती अवधारी ॥४१॥
Transliteration: Aisi rajakachi katha | Pudhe sanguna vistarata | Siddha mhane Namadharaka aata | Charitra pudhati avadhari || 41 ||
Meaning: After narrating the story of the washerman in detail, Siddha said to Namadharaka, "Now, listen to the further divine accounts."
Ovi 42 Original: ऐसे झालीया अवसरी । श्रीपादराय कुरवपुरी । असता महिमा अपरंपारी । प्रख्यात असे परियेसा ॥४२॥
Transliteration: Aise jhaliya avasari | Shripadaraya Kuravapuri | Asata mahima aparampari | Prakhyata ase pariyesa || 42 ||
Meaning: While Shripad Maharaja stayed at Kuravapur, His infinite glory spread far and wide.
Ovi 43 Original: महिमा सकळ सांगता । विस्तार होईल बहु कथा । पुढील अवतार असे ख्याता । सांगेन ऐक नामधारका ॥४३॥
Transliteration: Mahima sakala sangata | Vistara hoila bahu katha | Pudhila avatara ase khyata | Sangena aika Namadharaka || 43 ||
Meaning: "If I tell you all His glories, the story will become very long. I will now tell you about the famous incarnation that followed."
Ovi 44 Original: महत्त्व वर्णावया श्रीगुरूचे । शक्ति कैची या वाचे । नवल हे अमृतदृष्टीचे । स्थानमहिमा ऐसा ॥४४॥
Transliteration: Mahattva varnavaya Shri-Guruche | Shakti kaichi ya vache | Navala he amrutadrushtiche | Sthanamahima aisa || 44 ||
Meaning: My speech lacks the power to describe the greatness of Shri Guru. Such is the wonder of His nectar-like gaze and the glory of that holy place.
Ovi 45 Original: श्रीगुरु राहती जे स्थानी । अपार महिमा त्या भुवनी । विचित्र जयाची करणी । दृष्टान्ते तुज सांगेन ॥४५॥
Transliteration: Shri-Guru rahati je sthani | Apara mahima tya bhuvani | Vichitra jayachi karani | Drushtante tuja sangena || 45 ||
Meaning: The place where Shri Guru resides gains infinite glory. I will give you examples of His miraculous deeds.
Ovi 46 Original: स्थानमहिमाप्रकार । सांगेन ऐक एकाग्र । प्रख्यात असे कुरवपूर । मनकामना पुरती तेथे ॥४६॥
Transliteration: Sthanamahimaprakara | Sangena aika ekagra | Prakhyata ase Kuravapura | Manakamana purati tethe || 46 ||
Meaning: "Listen with a focused mind as I describe the glory of the place. Kuravapur is famous, and all heart's desires are fulfilled there."
Ovi 47 Original: ऐसे कित्येक दिवसांवरी । श्रीपाद होते कुरवपुरी । कारण असे पुढे अवतारी । म्हणोनि अदृश्य होते तेथे ॥४७॥
Transliteration: Aise kityeka divasanvari | Shripada hote Kuravapuri | Karana ase pudhe avatari | Mhanoni adrushya hote tethe || 47 ||
Meaning: Shripad stayed at Kuravapur for many days. Since He had to take another incarnation, He eventually became invisible (left His physical form) there.
Ovi 48 Original: आश्विन वद्य द्वादशी । नक्षत्र मृगराज परियेसी । श्रीगुरु बैसले निजानंदेसी । अदृश्य झाले गंगेत ॥४८॥
Transliteration: Ashvina vadya dvadashi | Nakshatra Mrugaraja pariyesi | Shri-Guru baisale nijanandesi | Adrushya jhale Gangeta || 48 ||
Meaning: On the 12th day of the dark half of the month of Ashwin (Ashwin Vadya Dwadashi), under the Mriga star, Shri Guru sat in eternal bliss and disappeared into the river.
Ovi 49 Original: लौकिकी दिसती अदृश्य जाण । कुरवपुरी असती आपण । श्रीपादराव निर्धार जाण । त्रयमूर्तिचा अवतार ॥४९॥
Transliteration: Laukiki disati adrushya jana | Kuravapuri asati apana | Shripadaraya nirdhara jana | Trayamurticha avatara || 49 ||
Meaning: Though He appeared to have vanished to the common world, know for certain that He remains in Kuravapur. Shripad Maharaja is surely the incarnation of the Trinity.
Ovi 50 Original: अदृश्य होवोनि तया स्थानी । श्रीपाद राहिले निर्गुणी । दृष्टान्त सांगेन विस्तारोनि । म्हणे सरस्वतीगंगाधरू ॥५०॥
Transliteration: Adrushya hovoni taya sthani | Shripada rahile nirguni | Drushtanta sangena vistaroni | Mhane Sarasvati-Gangadharu || 50 ||
Meaning: After becoming invisible there, Shripad remained in His formless (Nirguna) state. Saraswati Gangadhar says, "I will describe these accounts in detail."
Ovi 51 Original: जे जन असती भक्त केवळ । त्यांसी दिसती श्रीगुरु निर्मळ । कुरवपूर क्षेत्र अपूर्व स्थळ । असे प्रख्यात भूमंडळी ॥५१॥
Transliteration: Je jana asati bhakta kevala | Tyansi disati Shri-Guru nirmala | Kuravapura kshetra apurva sthala | Ase prakhyata bhumandali || 51 ||
Meaning: Those who are true devotees can still see the pure form of Shri Guru. Kuravapur is a miraculous place and is famous across the world.
Ovi 52 Original: सिद्ध सांगे नामधारकासी । तेचि कथा विस्तारेसी । सांगतसे सकळिकांसी । गंगाधराचा आत्मज ॥५२॥
Transliteration: Siddha sange Namadharakasi | Techi katha vistaresi | Sangatase sakalikansi | Gangadharacha atmaja || 52 ||
Meaning: Siddha narrated this story in detail to Namadharaka. The son of Gangadhar (Saraswati Gangadhar) now tells it to all.
