Introduction: The 'Shree Guru Charitra' is a divine scripture from the 14th century, dedicated to Lord Dattatreya and his incarnations. This book presents the 1st chapter in a simple format to help the modern generation understand the essence of Guru Bhakti.

Ovi 1: Om Namoji Vighnahara | Gajanana Girijakumara | Jaya Jaya Lambodara | Ekadanta Shurpakarna ||1||

 Meaning: O Remover of obstacles, son of Parvati, Ganesha! Victory to You, the one with a large belly, single tusk, and winnow-like ears. I bow to You.

Ovi 2: Halavishi Karnayugule | Tethuni Jo Ka Vara Usale | Tyacheni Vate Vighna Pale | Vighnantak Mhanti Tuja ||2|| 

Meaning: When you flap your ears, the wind that arises makes all obstacles flee. Hence, You are called 'Vighnantak' (Destroyer of Obstacles).

Ovi 3: Tujhe Shobhe Aanana | Jaise Tapta Kanchana | Kinva Udita Prabhāramana | Taise Teja Phākatase ||3|| 

Meaning: Your face shines like molten gold or like the rising sun, spreading divine radiance everywhere.

Ovi 4: Vighnakananchhedanāsi | Hati Pharasha Dharilasi | Nagabanda Katisi | Uraga Yagnopavita ||4|| 

Meaning: You hold an axe to cut down the forest of obstacles. You wear a snake as a waistband and as a sacred thread.

Ovi 5: Chaturbhuja Disasi Nika | Vishalaksha Vinayaka | Pratipālisi Vishvaloka | Nirvighne Karuniya ||5||

 Meaning: O large-eyed Vinayaka, You look beautiful with four arms. You protect the entire world by keeping it free from obstacles.

Ovi 6: Tujhe Chintana Je Kariti | Taya Vighne Na Badhati | Sakalābhiste Sadhati | Avilambesi ||6|| 

Meaning: Those who meditate upon You are never troubled by obstacles. All their desires are fulfilled without any delay.

Ovi 7: Sakala Mangala Karyasi | Prathama Vandije Tumhasi | Chaturdasha Vidyansi | Swami Tuchi Lambodara ||7||

 Meaning: For all auspicious tasks, You are worshipped first. You are the master of all fourteen sciences, O Lambodara.

Ovi 8: Veda Shastre Purane | Tujhechi Asele Bolane | Brahmādiki Ya Karane | Stavila Ase Suravari ||8|| 

Meaning: The Vedas, Shastras, and Puranas are Your words. That is why Brahma and other gods praise You.

Ovi 9: Tripura Sadhana Karavayasi | Ishvare Archile Tumhasi | Sanharavaya Daityansi | Pahile Tumhansi Stavile ||9|| 

Meaning: Lord Shiva worshipped You before destroying Tripurasura. To defeat the demons, You were praised first.

Ovi 10: Harihara Brahmādika Ganapati | Kāryārambhī Tuja Vanditī | Sakalābhīste Sādhatī | Tujheni Prasāde ||10|| 

Meaning: Vishnu, Shiva, and Brahma worship You at the beginning of any task. By Your grace, all their wishes are fulfilled.

Ovi 11: Krupanidhi Gananatha | Suravarādika Vighnaharta | Vinayaka Abhayadata | Matiprakasha Kari Maja ||11|| 

Meaning: O Ocean of Mercy, Leader of Ganas, Destroyer of obstacles for gods, Grantor of fearlessness, enlighten my intellect.

Ovi 12: Samasta Ganancha Nayaka | Tuchi Vighnancha Antaka | Tute Vanditi Je Loka | Karya Sadhe Tayanche ||12|| 

Meaning: You are the leader of all Ganas and the gender of obstacles. Those who bow to You find success in their work.

Ovi 13: Sakala Karya Adharu | Tuchi Krupecha Sagaru | Karunanidhi Gaurikumaru | Matiprakasha Kari Maja ||13|| 

Meaning: You are the foundation of all tasks and the ocean of grace. O son of Gauri, enlighten my intellect.

Ovi 14: Majhe Maninchi Vasana | Tuva Puravavi Gajanana | Sashtanga Karito Namana | Vidya Dei Maja Ata ||14|| 

Meaning: O Gajanana, fulfill the desires of my heart. I offer You a prostrated salutation; please grant me knowledge now.

Ovi 15: Nenata Hoto Matihina | Mhanoni Dharile Tujhe Charana | Chauda Vidyanche Nidhana | Sharanagatavaraprada ||15|| 

Meaning: I am ignorant and without intellect, which is why I hold Your feet. O storehouse of fourteen sciences, granter of boons to those who surrender.

Ovi 16: Majhiya Antahkaraniche Vhave | Gurucharitra Kathana Karave | Purnadrushtine Pahave | Granthasiddhi Pavavi Datara ||16|| 

Meaning: It is the wish of my heart to narrate the 'Gurucharitra'. O Giver, look upon me with full grace and help me complete this scripture successfully.

Ovi 17: Ata Vandu Brahmakumari | Jiche Nama Vagishvari | Pustaka Vina Jiche Kari | Hansavahini Ase Dekha ||17|| 

Meaning: Now I bow to the daughter of Brahma, whose name is Vagishvari (Saraswati). She holds a book and a Veena in her hands and rides a swan.

Ovi 18: Mhanoni Namato Tujhe Charani | Prasanna Vhave Maja Svamini | Rahoniya Majhiye Vani | Granthi Righu Kari Ata ||18|| 

Meaning: Therefore, I bow at Your feet. O Goddess, be pleased with me. Dwell in my speech and begin the narration of this book through me.

Ovi 19: Vidya Veda Shastransi | Adhikara Jana Sharadesi | Tiye Vandita Vishvasi | Gyana Hoye Avadhara ||19|| 

Meaning: Know that Goddess Sharada has authority over knowledge, Vedas, and Shastras. By bowing to Her, one attains wisdom.

Ovi 20: Aika Majhi Vinanti | Dyavi Ata Avalila Mati | Vistara Karavaya Gurucharitri | Matiprakasha Kari Maja ||20|| 

Meaning: Listen to my prayer. Grant me an effortless intellect. Enlighten my mind so I can elaborate on the Gurucharitra.

Ovi 21: Jaya Jaya Jaganmate | Tuchi Vishvi Vagdevate | Vedashastre Tujhi Likhite | Nandavishi Yenepari ||21|| 

Meaning: Victory to the Mother of the Universe! You are the Goddess of Speech in this world. The Vedas and Shastras are Your creations, and You sustain them in this manner.

Ovi 22: Mate Tujhiya Vagbani | Utpatti Vedashastrapurani | Vadata Sahi Darshani | Tyante Ashakya Pariyēsa ||22|| 

Meaning: O Mother, the Vedas, Shastras, and Puranas originated from Your speech. It is impossible even for the six philosophies to fully describe Your greatness.

Ovi 23: Gurunche Nami Tujhi Sthita | Mhanti Nrusinhasarasvati | Yakarane Majavari Priti | Nama Apule Mhanuni ||23|| 

Meaning: You reside in the name of the Guru, as he is called 'Nrusimha Saraswati'. Since You share the name 'Saraswati', I am certain of Your love for me.

Ovi 24: Khambasutrinchi Bahuli Jaisi | Khelati Taya Sutrasarasi | Svatantrabudhi Nahi Tyansi | Vartati Anikacheni Mate ||24|| 

Meaning: Just as a puppet tied to a pole dances according to the strings and has no independent will, moving only as directed by another...

Ovi 25: Taise Tujheni Anumate | Majhe Jivhe Prerimate | Krupanidhi Vagdevate | Mhanoni Vinavi Tujha Bala ||25|| 

Meaning: Similarly, O Goddess of Speech, by Your permission and grace, inspire my tongue. This is the humble prayer of Your child.

Ovi 26: Mhanoni Namile Tujhe Charana | Vhave Svamini Prasanna | Dyave Mate Varadana | Granthi Righu Karavi Ata ||26|| 

Meaning: Therefore, I have bowed at Your feet. O Goddess, be pleased and grant me a boon so that I may begin this sacred book.

Ovi 27: Ata Vandu Trimurtisi | Brahmavishnushivansi | Vidya Mage Mi Tayasi | Anukrame Karoni ||27||

 Meaning: Now I bow to the Trinity—Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva—and pray to them in sequence for wisdom.

Ovi 28: Chaturmukhe Asati Jyasi | Karta Jo Ka Srushtisi | Veda Jhale Bolate Jyasi | Tyache Charani Namana Majhe ||28|| 

Meaning: I bow at the feet of the four-faced Creator of the universe, from whose mouths the Vedas emerged.

Ovi 29: Ata Vandu Hrushikeshi | Jo Nayaka Taya Vishvasi | Lakshmisahita Aharnishi | Kshirasagari Ase Jana ||29|| 

Meaning: Now I bow to Hrushikesha (Lord Vishnu), the master of the universe, who resides eternally in the Ocean of Milk with Goddess Lakshmi.

Ovi 30: Chaturbahu Narahari | Shankha Chakra Gada Kari | Padmahasta Murari | Padmanabha Pariyēsa ||30|| 

Meaning: He is the four-armed Lord, holding the conch, discus, and mace. He is Murari with lotus-like hands, the one with a lotus emerging from his navel.

Ovi 31: Pitambara Ase Kasiyela | Vaijayanti Mala Gala | Sharanagata Abhista Sakala | Deta Hoye Krupalu ||31|| 

Meaning: Draped in yellow silk (Pitambara) and wearing the Vaijayanti garland, He is the merciful one who fulfills all the desires of those who seek refuge.

Ovi 32: Ata Namu Shivasi | Dharili Ganga Mastakesi | Panchavaktra Daha Bhujesi | Ardhangi Ase Jaganmata ||32|| 

Meaning: Now I bow to Lord Shiva, who holds the Ganges on his head. He has five faces and ten arms, with the Mother of the Universe (Parvati) as half of his body.

Ovi 33: Panchavadane Asati Jyasi | Sanhari Jo Ya Srushtisi | Mhanoni Bolati Smashanavasi | Tyache Charani Namana Majhe ||33|| 

Meaning: I bow at the feet of the five-faced Lord who destroys the universe at the end of time, and who is known as the dweller of the cremation ground.

Ovi 34: Vyaghrāmbara Pāngharūna | Sarvāngī Ase Sarpaveshtana | Aisā Shambhu Umāramana | Tyāche Charanī Namana Mājhe ||34|| 

Meaning: Clad in tiger skin and entwined with serpents, I bow at the feet of Lord Shambhu, the beloved husband of Uma.

Ovi 35: Namana Samasta Suravara | Siddhasadhyan Avadhara | Gandharvayakshakinnara | Rushishvara Namana Majhe ||35|| 

Meaning: Listen, O seekers, I bow to all the gods, the Siddhas, Sadhyas, Gandharvas, Yakshas, Kinnaras, and the great sages.

Ovi 36: Vandu Ata Kavikulasi | Parasharadi Vyasansi | Valmikadi Sakalikansi | Namana Majhe Pariyēsa ||36|| 

Meaning: Now I bow to the lineage of poets—Parashara, Vyasa, Valmiki, and all others. Please accept my salutations.

Ovi 37: Nene Kavitva Ase Kaise | Mhanoni Tumha Vinavitase | Gyana Dyave Ji Bharavase | Apula Dasa Mhanoni ||37|| 

Meaning: I do not know the art of poetry, so I pray to you. Considering me your servant, grant me the certainty of knowledge.

Ovi 38: Na Kale Granthaprakara | Nene Shastrancha Vichara | Bhasha Naye Maharashtra | Mhanoni Vinavi Tumhasi ||38||

 Meaning: I do not understand the structure of scriptures or the depths of philosophy. I am even humble about my command over language; hence I pray to you.

Ovi 39: Samasta Tumhi Krupa Karane | Majhiya Vachana Sahya Hone | Shabdabyutpattihi Nene | Kavikula Tumhi Pratipala ||39|| 

Meaning: May you all be merciful and assist my words. I do not know the etymology of words; O poets, please protect and guide me.

Ovi 40: Aise Sakalika Vinavoni | Mag Dhyāile Purvaja Mani | Ubhayapaksha Janakajanani | Mahatmya Punyapurushanche ||40|| 

Meaning: Having prayed to all, the author then remembered his ancestors—both on his father's and mother's side—the great and holy souls.

Ovi 41: Apastambashakhesi | Gotra Kaundinya Mahārushi | Sakhare Nama Khyatishi | Sayandevapasava ||41|| 

Meaning: Belonging to the Apastamba Shakha and Kaundinya Gotra, the family became famous as 'Sakhare', descending from Sayandeva.

Ovi 42: Tyapasuni Naganatha | Devarao Tayacha Suta | Sada Shrisadgurucharana Dhyata | Gangadhara Janaka Majha ||42|| 

Meaning: From him came Naganatha, and then Devarao. My father, Gangadhara, always meditated upon the feet of the Sadguru.

Ovi 43: Namana Karita Janakacharani | Matapurvaja Dhyato Mani | Jo Ka Purvaja Namadharani | Ashvalayana Shakhecha ||43||

 Meaning: Bowing at my father's feet, I also remember my mother's ancestors, who belonged to the Ashvalayana Shakha and were named 'Namadharani'.

Ovi 44: Kashyapache Gotri | Chaundeshvari Namadhari | Vage Jaisa Janhu Avadhara | Athava Janaka Gangecha ||44|| 

Meaning: They belonged to the Kashyapa Gotra and bore the name 'Chaundeshvari'. They were like Sage Janhu or the King of Himalayas (father of Ganga).

Ovi 45: Tyachi Kanya Majhi Janani | Nishchaye Jaishi Bhavani | Champa Name Punyakhani | Svamini Majhi Pariyēsa ||45||

 Meaning: His daughter is my mother, who is like Goddess Bhavani herself. Her name is Champa, a mine of virtues, and she is my protector.

Ovi 46: Namita Janakajananisi | Nanatara Namu Shrigurusi | Ghali Mati Prakashī | Gurucharana Smaravaya ||46|| 

Meaning: After bowing to my parents, I bow to the Holy Guru. May He enlighten my mind to remember His divine feet.

Ovi 47: Gangadharache Kushi | Janma Jhala Pariyēsi | Sada Dhyae Shrigurusi | Eka Bhave Nirantara ||47|| 

Meaning: Know that I was born in Gangadhara. I constantly meditate upon the Holy Guru with single-minded devotion.

Ovi 48: Mhanoni Sarasvatigangadhara | Kari Santansi Namaskara | Shrotaye Vinavi Varamvara | Kshama Karane Balakasi ||48|| 

Meaning: Therefore, Sarasvati-Gangadhara (the author) bows to the saints and repeatedly requests the listeners to forgive this child for any mistakes.

Ovi 49: Vedabhyasi Sanyasi | Yati Yogeshvara Tapasi | Sada Dhyati Shrigurusi | Tayansi Majha Namaskara ||49|| 

Meaning: I bow to the scholars of Vedas, the monks, yogis, and ascetics who always meditate upon the Holy Guru.

Ovi 50: Vinavitase Samastansi | Alpamati Apanasi | Majhe Bobade Bolansi | Sakala Tumhi Angikara ||50|| 

Meaning: I pray to everyone; my intellect is limited. Please accept these simple and faltering words of mine.

Ovi 51:Tavanmatra Majhi Mati | Nene Kavyavyutapatti |Jaise Shriguru Niropiti | Tene Pari Sangata ||51||

Meaning: My intellect is limited; I do not know the art of poetic composition. I am only narrating it exactly as the Holy Guru inspires me to.

Ovi 52:Purvapara Amuche Vanshi | Guru Prasanna Aharnishi |Niropa Deti Mate Pariyēsi | Charitra Apule Vistaravaya ||52||

Meaning: In our lineage, the Guru has been pleased day and night since ancient times. Listen, He himself has commanded me to elaborate on His divine life story.

Ovi 53:Mhane Grantha Kathana Kari | Amrutaghata Svikari |Tujhe Vanshi Paramparī | Lādhatī Chārī Purushārtha ||53||

Meaning: (The Guru said) "Narrate this scripture and accept this vessel of nectar. Your descendants will forever attain the four goals of life: Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha."

Ovi 54:Guruvakya Majha Kamadhenu | Mani Nahi Anumanu |Siddhi Pavavinara Apunu | Shrinrusinhasarasvati ||54||

Meaning: For me, the Guru's word is like the wish-fulfilling cow (Kamadhenu). I have no doubt in my mind that Lord Nrusimha Saraswati Himself will bring this work to completion.

Ovi 55:Traimurticha Avatara | Jhala Nrusinhasarasvati Nara |Kavana Jane Yacha Para | Charitra Kavana Na Varnave ||55||

Meaning: Lord Nrusimha Saraswati is the incarnation of the Trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh) in human form. No one can find the limit of His glory; His life cannot be fully described by anyone.

Ovi 56:Charitra Aise Shriguruche | Varnu Na Shake Mi Vache |Agyāpana Ase Shriguruche | Mhanoni Vache Bolatase ||56||

Meaning: I cannot describe such a divine life with my mere speech. However, it is the command of the Holy Guru, and that is why I speak.

Ovi 57:Jyasa Putrapautri Ase Chada | Tyasi Katha He Ase Goda |Lakshmi Vase Akhanda | Taya Bhuvani Pariyēsa ||57||

Meaning: Those who desire children and grandchildren will find this story very sweet. Listen, Goddess Lakshmi will reside eternally in their homes.

Ovi 58:Aishi Katha Jayache Ghari | Vachiti Nitya Premabhari |Shriyayukta Nirantari | Nandati Putrakalatrayukta ||58||

Meaning: In the house where this story is read daily with love, the family will live forever with wealth, children, and their spouse.

Ovi 59:Roga Nahi Taya Bhuvani | Sada Santushta Gurukrupekaroni |Nisandeha Sata Dini | Aikata Bandhana Tute Jana ||59||

Meaning: No disease shall enter that house. They will always be satisfied by the Guru's grace. Verily, by listening to this for seven days (Saptah), all bonds are broken.

Ovi 60:Aishi Punyapavana Katha | Sangena Aika Vistarata |Sayasavina Hoye Sadhyata | Sadyaphala Prapta Hoye ||60||

Meaning: I shall tell you this holy and purifying story in detail. Success will be achieved without great toil, and immediate results will be obtained.

Ovi 61:Nidhana Ladhe Aprayasi | Tari Kashta Ka Sayasi |Vishvasa Majhiya Bolasi | Aika Shrote Ekachitte ||61||

Meaning: If a treasure is found without effort, why toil? Believe in my words and listen with a focused mind, O listeners.

Ovi 62:Amha Sakshi Aise Ghadale | Mhanoni Vinavitase Bale |Shrigurusmarana Ase Bhale | Anubhava Ho Sakalika ||62||

Meaning: This has happened to me as a witness, which is why I pray to you so insistently. Remembering the Holy Guru is truly beneficial; may you all experience this.

Ovi 63: Trupti Jhaliyavari Dhekara | Deti Jaise Jevanara | Gurumahimecha Udgara | Bolatase Anubhuvoni ||63|| 

Meaning: Just as a person belches in satisfaction after a full meal, I am speaking these words of the Guru's glory from my own experience.

Ovi 64: Mi Samanya Mhanoni | Udasa Vhala Majhe Vachani | Makshikecha Mukhantuni | Madhu Kevi Graha Hoye ||64||

 Meaning: Do not be indifferent to my words just because I am an ordinary person. Does one not accept honey even though it comes from the mouth of a bee?

Ovi 65: Jaise Shimpalyanta Muktaphala | Athava Karpura Kadala | Vichari Pa Ashvatthamula | Kavanapasava Utpatti ||65|| 

Meaning: Just as a pearl is found in a shell, or camphor in a banana plant, consider the origin of the sacred Peepal tree (Ashvattha). Good things can come from humble origins.

Ovi 66: Grantha Karala Udasa | Vakuda Krushna Dise Usa | Amrutavata Nighe Tyacha Rasa | Drushti Dyavi Tayavari ||66|| 

Meaning: Do not ignore this book. A sugarcane may look crooked and dark, but its juice is like nectar. Focus on the essence.

Ovi 67: Taise Majhe Bolane | Jyachi Chada Gurusmarane | Angikara Karanara Shahane | Anubhutiti Ekachitte ||67|| 

Meaning: Similarly, those who yearn to remember the Guru will wisely accept my words and experience the truth with a focused mind.

Ovi 68: Brahmarasachi Godi | Anubhutita Phale Rokadi | Ya Bolachi Avadi | Jyasi Sambhave Anubhava ||68|| 

Meaning: The sweetness of this divine essence (Brahmarasa) yields immediate results when experienced. Only those who desire the experience will love these words.

Ovi 69: Gurucharitra Kamadhenu | Aikata Hoye Mahagyanu | Shroti Karoniya Savadha Manu | Ekachitte Pariyēsa ||69|| 

Meaning: The Gurucharitra is like the Kamadhenu. Listening to it brings great wisdom. O listeners, keep your minds alert and listen with one-pointed attention.

Ovi 70: Shrigurunrusinhasarasvati | Hote Ganagapuri Khyati | Mahima Tyancha Atyadbhuti | Sangena Aika Ekachitte ||70|| 

Meaning: Lord Nrusimha Saraswati became famous at Ganagapur. His glory is most wonderful; I shall tell it to you, listen with a focused mind.

Ovi 71: Taya Grami Vasati Guru | Mhanoni Mahima Ase Thoru | Janati Loka Chahu Rashtru | Samasta Jati Yatresi ||71||

 Meaning: Because the Guru resides in that village, its glory is great. People from all over the country know this and go there on pilgrimage.

Ovi 72: Tethe Rahoni Aradhiti | Tvarita Hoye Phalaprapti | Putra Dara Dhana Sampatti | Je Je Icchile Hoye Jana ||72||

 Meaning: Those who stay there and worship receive quick results. They obtain children, spouses, wealth, and whatever they desire.

Ovi 73: Ladhoniya Santane | Name Thiviti Namakarane | Santosharupe Yeuna | Pavati Chari Purushartha ||73|| 

Meaning: Having obtained children, people name them after the Guru. They return with joy and achieve the four goals of life.

Ovi 74: Aise Asata Vartamani | Bhakta Eka 'Namakarani' | Kashtatase Ati Gahani | Sada Dhyae Shrigurusi ||74|| 

Meaning: While things were thus, there was a devotee named 'Namadharaka' (Namakarani). He was in deep distress and always meditated upon the Holy Guru.

Ovi 75: Aisa Mani Vyakulita | Chintene Veshtila Bahuta | Gurudarshana Jau Mhanta | Nirvanamanase Nighala ||75|| 

Meaning: His mind was so troubled and surrounded by worries that he decided to go for the Guru's vision (Darshan) with a desperate heart.

Ovi 76: Ati Nirvana Antahkarni | Laya Hovoni Gurucharni | Jato Shishyashiromani | Visaroniya Kshudhatrusha ||76|| Meaning: With extreme longing in his heart and his mind merged with the Guru's feet, that jewel among disciples set out, forgetting hunger and thirst.

Ovi 77: Nirdhara Karoni Manasi | Mhane Pahina Shrigurusi | Athava Sandina Dehasi | Jadasvarupe Kaya Kaja ||77|| 

Meaning: With a firm resolve, he said, "I will see the Holy Guru, or I will give up this body. What is the use of this lifeless form?"

Ovi 78: Jyache Namasmarana Karita | Dainyahani Hoye Tvarita | Apana Taisa Namankita | Kinkara Mhanatase ||78|| 

Meaning: He called himself the servant (Kinkara) of the Lord, whose name-repetition quickly destroys poverty and misery.

Ovi 79: Daiva Ase Apule Une | Tari Ka Bhajave Shrigurucharana | Parisa Lavata Loha Jana | Suvarna Kevi Hotase ||79|| 

Meaning: (He thought) "If my fate is lacking, why should I worship the Guru's feet? If iron is touched by the philosopher's stone (Paris), does it not turn into gold?"

Ovi 80: Taise Tujhe Nama Parise | Majhe Hradayi Sada Vase | Mate Kashti Sayase | Thivita Laja Kavanasi ||80|| 

Meaning: "Similarly, Your name is like Paris and it always dwells in my heart. If You keep me in such toil and distress, who should feel ashamed?"

Meaning: Just as a cow rushes to its calf, the Holy Guru Himself comes near him.

 Meaning: As soon as the Guru arrived, Namadharaka bowed and placed his head upon His feet.

Meaning: He untied his hair and used it to wipe the dust from the Guru's feet, and washed those feet with tears of joy.

Meaning: Placing the Guru clearly within the temple of his heart, he performed worship with the sixteen-fold rituals.

Meaning: Namadharaka was filled with bliss, and the Holy Guru became steady within his heart.
