Introduction

: The Second Chapter of the Shri Guru Charitra is the soul of this sacred text. It marks the beginning of the divine conversation between the great Siddha Yogi and the seeker Namadharaka. While the first chapter introduced the lineage, this chapter establishes the absolute necessity and supreme power of a "Guru" (Spiritual Preceptor) in a seeker's life.

Ovi 1: Traimurtiraja Guru Tuchi Majha | Krishnatiri Vasa Karoni Voja | Subhakta Tethe Kariti Ananda | Te Sura Svargi Pahati Vinoda ||1|| 

Meaning: O King of the Trinity, You are my true Guru! You reside gracefully on the banks of the Krishna River. There, Your devotees celebrate in bliss, a sight that even the gods in heaven watch with delight.

Ovi 2: Aise Shrigurucharana Dhyata | Jata Vishnunamankita | Ati Shramala Chalata | Rahila Eka Vrukshatali ||2|

| Meaning: While meditating on the feet of the Holy Guru, the devotee Namadharaka (Vishnunamankita) became very tired from walking and stopped to rest under a tree.

Ovi 3: Kshana Eka Nidrista | Mani Shriguru Chintita | Krupanidhi Ananta | Dise Svapni Pariyēsa ||3|| 

Meaning: He fell asleep for a moment, and while his mind was still meditating on the Guru, listen—the Infinite Ocean of Mercy appeared to him in a dream.

Ovi 4: Rupa Dise Sushuptit | Jatadhari Bhasmankita | Vyaghracharma Paridhanit | Pitambara Kase Dekha ||4|| 

Meaning: In his deep sleep, he saw a form with matted hair, covered in sacred ash. He was wearing tiger skin and a yellow silk cloth (Pitambara) around his waist.

Ovi 5: Yeuni Yogishvara Jawali | Bhasma Lavile Kapali | Ashvashuni Taya Veli | Abhayakara Detase ||5|

| Meaning: The Lord of Yogis came near him, applied sacred ash to his forehead, and comforted him by placing His hand of fearlessness (Abhayahasta) on his head.

Ovi 6: Ituke Dekhoni Sushuptit | Chetana Jhala Namankit | Chari Disha Avalokit | Vismaya Kari Taya Veli ||6||

 Meaning: Having seen all this in his dream, Namadharaka woke up. He looked in all four directions and was filled with great wonder.

Ovi 7: Murti Dekhili Sushuptit | Techi Dhyatase Manat | Pudhe Nighala Marga Kramit | Pratyaksha Dekhe Taisachi ||7|| 

Meaning: He was meditating on the same form he saw in his dream. As he continued his journey, he suddenly saw that very same form standing right before him in reality.

Ovi 8: Dekhoniya Yogishate | Karita Jhala Dandavate | Krupa Bhaki Karunavaktre | Mata Pita Tu Mhanatase ||8|| 

Meaning: Seeing the Lord of Yogis, he immediately offered a prostrated salutation (Dandavat). With a voice full of emotion, he begged for mercy and said, "You are my mother and my father."

Ovi 9: Jaya Jayaji Yogadhisha | Agnanatamavinasha | Tu Jyotiprakasha | Krupanidhi Siddhamuni ||9|| 

Meaning: Victory to You, the Lord of Yoga, the destroyer of the darkness of ignorance! You are the light of divine flame, O Ocean of Mercy, Siddhamuni.

Ovi 10: Tujhe Darshane Nishesh | Gele Majhe Duritadosha | Tu Taraka Amhas | Mhanoni Alasi Svamiya ||10|| 

Meaning: By Your divine vision, all my sins and troubles have been completely destroyed. O Swami, You are our savior; that is why You have come here.

Ovi 11: Krupene Bhaktalaguni | Yene Jhale Kothoni | Tumche Nama Kavana Muni | Kavane Sthani Vasa Tumha ||11|| 

Meaning: Out of mercy for Your devotee, from where have You come? O Sage, what is Your name and where is Your holy abode?

Ovi 12: Siddha Mhane Apana Yogi | Hindu Tirtha Bhumisvargi | Prasiddha Amucha Guru Jani | Nrusinhasarasvati Vikhyata ||12|| 

Meaning: The Siddha replied, "I am a Yogi. I travel through holy places on earth and in heaven. Our Guru is famous among people as the renowned Nrusimha Saraswati."

Ovi 13: Tyanche Sthana Ganagapura | Amarajasangama Bhimatira | Trayamurticha Avatara | Shrinrusinhasarasvati ||13|| 

Meaning: His abode is Ganagapur, at the confluence of the Amaraja and Bhima rivers. Shri Nrusimha Saraswati is the incarnation of the Trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh).

Ovi 14: Bhakta Taravayalagi | Avatara Trayamurti Jagi | Sada Dhyati Abhyasayogi | Bhavasagara Taravaya ||14|| 


Meaning: To save His devotees, the Trinity has taken this incarnation in the world. Wise Yogis always meditate upon Him to cross the ocean of worldly existence.


Ovi 15: Aisa Shriguru Krupasindhu | Bhaktajana Sada Varadu | Akhila Saukhya Shriyanandu | Deta Hoye Shishyavarga ||15||


 Meaning: Such is the Holy Guru, an ocean of mercy. He always grants boons to His devotees and bestows all types of happiness, wealth, and bliss upon His disciples.


Ovi 16: Tyache Bhakta Kaiche Dainya | Akhanda Lakshmi Paripurna | Dhanadhanyadi Godhana | Ashtaisvarya Nandati ||16|| 


Meaning: How can there be poverty for His devotees? They are blessed with eternal wealth. Riches, grains, cattle, and the eight forms of prosperity dwell in their homes.


Ovi 17: Aise Mhane Siddha Muni | Aikoni Vinavi Namakarni | Amhi Asati Sada Dhyani | Taya Shriguruyatiche ||17|| 


Meaning: When the Siddha Sage said this, Namadharaka listened and prayed, "I am also a constant meditator of that Holy Guru."


Ovi 18: Aishi Kirti Brida Khyati | Sangatase Siddha Yati | Vanshovanshi Karito Bhakti | Kashta Amha Kevi Pahe ||18|| 


Meaning: (Namadharaka said) O Siddha Yati, you speak of such great fame and glory. I have been worshipping Him for generations, so why must I still endure such hardships?


Ovi 19: Tu Taraka Amhansi | Mhanoni Mate Bhetalasi | Sanhara Karoni Sanshayasi | Niropave Svamiya ||19|| 


Meaning: You are our savior; that is why You met me. O Swami, please destroy my doubts and give me Your divine guidance.


Ovi 20: Siddha Mhane Taye Veli | Aika Shishya Stomamauli | Gurukrupa Sukshmasthuli | Bhaktavatsala Pariyēsa ||20|| 


Meaning: The Siddha then said, "Listen, O disciple! Understand that the Guru's grace exists in both subtle and gross forms. Know that He is truly fond of His devotees."


Ovi 21: Gurukrupa Hoye Jyasi | Dainya Dise Kaiche Tyasi | Samasta Deva Tyache Vanshi | Kalikalasi Jinke Nara ||21|| 


Meaning: To one who receives the Guru's grace, how can poverty touch him? All gods reside in his lineage, and such a man even conquers Time (Death).


Ovi 22: Aishi Vastu Pujuni | Dainyavruti Sangasi Jhani | Nasel Tuje Nishchaya Mani | Mhanoni Kashta Bhogitosi ||22|| 

Meaning: You worship such a Great Power (the Guru), yet you talk of poverty! It means you lack firm faith in your heart; that is why you are suffering.


Ovi 23: Trayamurti Shriguru | Mhanoni Janije Nirdharu | Deu Shakel Akhila Varu | Eka Bhave Bhajave ||23||


 Meaning: Know for certain that the Holy Guru is the Trinity. He can grant all boons; you must worship Him with single-minded devotion.


Ovi 24: Ekhade Samayi Shrihari | Athava Kope Tripurari | Rakshil Shriguru Nirdhari | Apule Bhaktajanansi ||24||


 Meaning: Even if Lord Vishnu or Lord Shiva were to get angry at some time, the Holy Guru will certainly protect His devotees.


Ovi 25: Apana Kope Ekhadasi | Rakshu Na Shake Vyomakeshi | Athava Vishnu Pariyēsi | Rakshu Na Shake Avadhari ||25|| 


Meaning: But if the Guru Himself gets angry with someone, neither Lord Shiva nor Lord Vishnu can protect that person. Mark these words.

Ovi 26: Aise Aikoni Namakarni | Lage Siddhachiya Charani | Vinavitase Kara Joduni | Bhaktibhave Karoniya ||26|| 

Meaning: Hearing this, Namadharaka fell at the feet of the Siddha and, with folded hands and deep devotion, began to pray.


Ovi 27: Swami Aisa Niropa Deti | Sandeha Hota Majhe Chitti | Guru Kevi Jhale Trimurti | Brahma Vishnu Maheshvara ||27|| 


Meaning: "O Swami, You give me such advice, but a doubt arises in my mind: How did the Guru become the Trinity—Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheswara?"


Ovi 28: Anika Tumhi Niropileti | Vishnu Rudra Jari Kopati | Rakho Shake Guru Nishchiti | Guru Kopaliya Na Rakshi Koni ||28|| 


Meaning: "And You also said that even if Vishnu or Shiva gets angry, the Guru can surely protect, but if the Guru is angry, no one can save. How is this possible?"


Ovi 29: Ha Bola Ase Kavanacha | Kavana Shastrapuranancha | Sandeha Phedi Ga Manacha | Jene Mana Drudha Hoye ||29|| 


Meaning: "Whose words are these? From which Shastra or Purana is this taken? Please clear this doubt of my mind so that my faith may become firm."


Ovi 30: Yenepari Namakarni | Siddhansi Puse Vandoni | Krupanidhi Santoshoni | Sangatase Pariyēsa ||30||

 Meaning: In this way, Namadharaka bowed and questioned the Siddha. The Ocean of Mercy (Siddha) was pleased and began to narrate. Listen.


Ovi 31: Siddha Mhane Shishyasi | Tuva Pusile Amhansi | Vedavakya Sakshisi | Sangena Aika Ekachitte ||31|| 


Meaning: The Siddha said to the disciple, "I will answer your question with the evidence of the Vedas. Listen with a focused mind."


Ovi 32: Veda Chari Utpanna | Jhale Brahmayache Mukhekruna | Tyapasava Purana | Ashtadasha Vikhyata ||32|| 


Meaning: The four Vedas emerged from the mouths of Lord Brahma. From them, the eighteen famous Puranas were born.


Ovi 33: Taya Ashtadashanta | Brahmavakya Ase Khyata | Purana Brahmavaivarta | Prakhyata Ase Tribhuvani ||33||


 Meaning: Among those eighteen, the 'Brahmavaivarta Purana' is famous as the word of Brahma and is well-known in all the three worlds.


Ovi 34: Narayana Vishnumurti | Vyasa Jhala Dvaparanti | Prakasha Kela Ya Kshiti | Brahmavakyavistare ||34|| 

Meaning: At the end of the Dwapara Yuga, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Sage Vyasa. He enlightened this earth by expanding on the words of Brahma.


Ovi 35: Taya Vyasapasuni | Aikile Samasta Rushijani | Techi Katha Vistaroni | Sangen Aika Ekachitti ||35|| 


Meaning: All the sages heard it from Sage Vyasa. I shall narrate that same story in detail; listen with one-pointed attention.


Ovi 36 & 37: Chaturmukha Brahmayasi | Kaliyuga Puse Harshi | Gurumahima Vinavitase Karadvaya Joduni | Bhavabhakti Karoniya ||36||37|| 


Meaning: In joy, the spirit of Kaliyuga approached the four-faced Brahma. With folded hands and deep devotion, it requested to hear the glory of the Guru.


Ovi 38: Mhane Siddha Yogishvara | Agnanatimirabhaskara | Tu Taraka Bhavasagara | Bhetalasi Krupasindhu ||38|| 


Meaning: (Namadharaka said to the Siddha) "O Lord of Yogis, You are like the sun to the darkness of ignorance! You are the savior from the ocean of worldly life. I am blessed to have met You, O Ocean of Mercy."


Ovi 39: Brahmadeve Kaliyugasi | Sangitale Kevi Karyasi | Adyanta Vistaresi | Niropije Svamiya ||39|| 



Meaning: "O Swami, please tell me from beginning to end, what task did Brahma assign to Kaliyuga?"


Ovi 40: Aika Shishya Ekachitta | Jadhi Pralaya Jhala Hota | Adimurti Nishchita | Hote Vatapatrashayani ||40|| 


Meaning: (Siddha said) "Listen with a focused mind. When the great dissolution (Pralaya) occurred, the Primordial Lord (Vishnu) was resting on a banyan leaf (Vatapatra)."

Ovi 41: Avyaktamurti Narayana | Hote Vatapatri Shayana | Buddhi Sambhave Chetana | Anika Srushti Rachavaya ||41|| 

Meaning: Lord Narayana, the unmanifested form, was reclining on the leaf. A conscious thought then arose in His mind to create the universe once again.

Ovi 42: Prapancha Mhanje Srushtirachana | Karane Mhanoni Ale Mana | Jagruta Hoye Ya Karana | Adipurusha Taye Veli ||42|| 

Meaning: Because He intended to create the cosmos, the Primordial Being woke up at that time.

Ovi 43: Jagruta Hovoni Narayana | Buddhi Sambhave Chetana | Kamala Upajavi Nabhihuna | Trailokyache Rachanaghara ||43|| 

Meaning: Upon waking, Lord Narayana's consciousness sparked. From His navel, He manifested a lotus, which was the foundation (house) for the creation of the three worlds.

Ovi 44: Taya Kamalamadhuna | Udaya Jhala Brahma Apana | Chari Disha Pahona | Chaturmukha Jhala Dekha ||44|| 

Meaning: From that lotus, Lord Brahma himself emerged. He looked in all four directions, and thus he became four-faced.

Ovi 45: Mhane Brahma Taye Veli | Samastahuni Apana Bali | Majhuna Anika Bali | Kavana Nahi Mhanatase ||45||

 Meaning: At that time, Brahma thought, "I am the strongest of all. There is no one more powerful than me."

Ovi 46: Hasoniya Narayanu | Bole Vache Shabdavachanu | Apana Ase Mahavishnu | Bhaja Mhane Taye Veli ||46|| 

Meaning: Lord Narayana smiled and spoke these words: "I am Mahavishnu. You should worship Me."

Ovi 47: Dekhoniya Shrivishnusi | Namaskari Brahma Harshi | Stuti Keli Bahuvasi | Aneka Kala Pariyēsa ||47|| 

Meaning: Seeing Lord Vishnu, Brahma bowed in joy and praised Him for a very long time.

Ovi 48: Santoshoni Narayana | Niropa Didhala Atigahana | Srushti Rachi Ga Mhanuna | Agna Didhali Taye Veli ||48||

 Meaning: Being pleased, Narayana gave a profound command. He ordered Brahma to begin the creation of the universe.

Ovi 49: Brahma Mhane Vishnusi | Nene Srushti Rachavayasi | Dekhili Nahi Kaisi | Kevi Rachu Mhanatase ||49|| 

Meaning: Brahma said to Vishnu, "I do not know how to create the universe. I have never seen it; how shall I build it?"

Ovi 50: Aikoni Brahmayache Vachana | Niropi Tyasi Mahavishnu Apana | Veda Asati He Ghe Mhanona | Deta Jhala Taye Veli ||50|| 

Meaning: Hearing Brahma's words, Mahavishnu gave him the Vedas and said, "Take these Vedas for guidance."

Ovi 51: Srushti Rachavyacha Vichara | Ase Vedanta Savistara | Tenechi Pari Rachuni Sthira | Prakasha Kari Mhanitale ||51|| 

Meaning: "The detailed plan for creating the universe is within the Vedas. Following that very path, create a stable and enlightened world," said Lord Vishnu.

Ovi 52: Anadi Veda Asati Jana | Ase Srushtiche Lakshana | Jaisa Arasa Ase Khuna | Srushti Rachavi Tayapari ||52|| 

Meaning: Know that the Vedas are eternal and describe the true nature of creation. Just as a mirror shows a clear reflection, create the world according to the Vedas.

Ovi 53: Ya Vedamarge Srushtisi | Rachi Ga Brahmaya Aharnishi | Mhanoni Sange Hrushikeshi | Brahma Rachi Srushtite ||53|| 

Meaning: Lord Hrushikesha (Vishnu) told Brahma to create the world day and night following the Vedic path. Thus, Brahma began the creation.

Ovi 54: Sruji Praja Anukrame | Vividha Sthavarajangame | Svedaja Andaja Name | Jaraja Udbhije Upajavile ||54|| 

Meaning: He created living beings in order: those that are stationary and those that move. He brought forth four types of life: from sweat, from eggs, from the womb, and from the earth (seeds).

Ovi 55: Shrivishnuche Niropane | Trijaga Rachile Brahmayane | Jyāparī Srushtikramane | Vyase Aishi Kathiyeli ||55|| 

Meaning: Following Vishnu’s command, Brahma created the three worlds. This sequence of creation has been narrated by Sage Vyasa.

Ovi 56: Siddha Mhane Shishyasi | Narayana Vedavyasa Rishi | Vistara Kela Puranansi | Ashtadasha Vikhyata ||56|| 


Meaning: The Siddha said to the disciple, "Lord Narayana and Sage Vyasa expanded upon the eighteen famous Puranas."

Ovi 57: Taya Ashtadashanta | Purana Brahmavaivarta | Rushishvarasi Sange Suta | Techi Pari Sangatase ||57|| 

Meaning: Among those eighteen, there is the Brahmavaivarta Purana, which Suta Goswami told to the great sages. I am narrating it to you in the same way.

Ovi 58: Sanakadikante Upajavoni | Brahmanishta Nirguni | Marichadi Brahma Saguni | Upajavi Brahma Taye Veli ||58|| 

Meaning: At that time, Brahma created the Sanaka sages, who were devoted to the formless (Nirguna) Brahman, and also Marichi and others for the manifest (Saguna) creation.

Ovi 59: Tethoni Devadaityansi | Upajavi Brahma Pariyēsi | Sangato Katha Vistaresi | Aika Ata Shishyottama ||59|| 

Meaning: From there, listen, Brahma created both gods and demons. O best of disciples, listen as I tell this story in detail.

Ovi 60: Kruta Treta Dvapara Yuga | Upajavi Maga Kaliyuga | Ekekate Niropi Maga | Bhumivari Pravartavaya ||60||

 Meaning: He created the eras of Kruta (Satya), Treta, and Dwapara, and then Kaliyuga. He then commanded each to go and manifest upon the earth.

Ovi 61: Bolavuni Krutayugasi Niropi Brahma Pariyēsi | Tuva Javoni Bhumisi | Prakasha Kari Apanate ||61|| 

Meaning: Brahma called the Kruta Yuga (Satya Yuga) and commanded, "Go to the earth and manifest your presence there."

Ovi 62: Aikoni Brahmayache Vachana | Krutayuga Ale Santoshona | Sangena Tyache Lakshana | Aika Shrote Ekachitte ||62||

 Meaning: Hearing Brahma's words, the Kruta Yuga arrived joyfully. O listeners, listen with one mind to its characteristics.

Ovi 63: Asatya Nene Kadhi Vache | Vairagyapurna Gyani Sache | Yagnopavita Arambhana Tyache | Rudrakshamala Kari Kankane ||63|| 

Meaning: It never tells a lie. It is full of true detachment and wisdom. It wears the sacred thread, and has rudraksha beads as bracelets.

Ovi 64: Yene Rupe Yuga Kruta | Brahmayasi Ase Vinavit | Mate Tumhi Niropa Det | Kevi Jau Bhumivari ||64|| 

Meaning: In this form, Kruta Yuga prayed to Brahma: "You are commanding me to go, but how can I stay on the earth?"

Ovi 65: Bhumivari Manushya Loka | Asatya Ninda Apavadaka | Mate Na Sahave Te Aika | Kavane Pari Vartave ||65|| 

Meaning: "The people on earth are liars, critics, and fault-finders. Listen, I cannot bear that. How should I behave there?"

Ovi 66: Aikoni Satyayugache Vachana | Niropito Brahma Apana | Tuva Vartave Sattvaguna | Kvachit-kala Yenepari ||66|| 

Meaning: Hearing Satya Yuga's words, Brahma advised, "Act with the quality of goodness (Sattva) for a certain period of time."

Ovi 67: Na Kari Jada Tute Jana | Anika Yuga Pathavina | Tuva Rahave Savadha Hauna | Mhanoni Pathavi Bhumivari ||67||

 Meaning: "Do not become stagnant. I will send another Yuga after you. Stay alert and do your duty." Saying this, he sent it to earth.

Ovi 68: Vartata Yenepari Aika | Jhali Avadhi Satyadhika | Bolavuni Tretayuga Dekha | Niropi Brahma Pariyēsa ||68|| 

Meaning: Listen, as time passed, the era of Satya came to an end. Then Brahma called the Treta Yuga and gave it his command.

Ovi 69: Tretayugache Lakshana | Aika Shishya Sangena | Ase Tyachi Sthula Tana | Hati Ase Yagnasamagri ||69|| 

Meaning: "Listen, disciple, I will tell you the traits of Treta Yuga. It has a large physical form and carries materials for sacrificial fire (Yagna) in its hands."

Ovi 70: Tretayugache Karana | Yagna Kariti Sakala Jana | Dharmashastrapravartana | Karmamarga Brahmanansi ||70|| 

Meaning: In Treta Yuga, all people perform Yagnas. The scriptures of Dharma prevail, and the path of action (Karma Marga) is established for the Brahmins.

Ovi 71: Hati Ase Kusha Samidha Aise | Dharmapravartaka Sada Vase | Aise Yuga Gele Harse | Niropa Gheuni Bhumivari ||71||

 Meaning: Carrying grass (Kusha) and wood (Samidha) for fire, it always promotes Dharma. Thus, this Yuga joyfully took leave and went to the earth.

Ovi 72: Bolavuni Brahma Harshi | Niropa Det Dvaparasi | Sangena Tayache Rupasi | Aika Shrote Ekachitte ||72|| 

Meaning: Brahma then called the Dwapara Yuga with joy and gave it a command. Listen, O listeners, with one mind to its description.

Ovi 73: Khadge Khatvanga Dharoni Hati | Dhanushya Bana Eke Hati | Lakshana Ugra Ase Shanti | Nishthura Daya Doni Ase ||73||

 Meaning: Holding a sword in one hand and a bow and arrow in the other; its nature is fierce yet peaceful, having both harshness and compassion.

Ovi 74: Punya Papa Samana Dekha | Svarupe Dvapara Ase Nika | Niropa Gheuni Kautuka | Ala Apana Bhumivari ||74|| 

Meaning: In this era, merit (Punya) and sin (Papa) are equal. Dwapara Yuga is pleasant in form. It took leave with wonder and descended to the earth.

Ovi 75: Tyache Divasa Purlyavari | Kaliyugate Pachari | Jave Tvarita Bhumivari | Mhanoni Sange Brahma Dekha ||75|| 

Meaning: When its time was over, Brahma called for Kaliyuga. "Go quickly to the earth," commanded Brahma.

Ovi 76: Aise Kaliyuga Dekha | Sangena Lakshane Aika | Brahmayache Sanmukha | Kevi Gele Pariyēsa ||76|| 

Meaning: Now, listen to the characteristics of Kaliyuga. Listen to how it appeared before Lord Brahma.

Ovi 77: Vicharahina Antahkarana | Pishachasarikhe Vadana | Tonda Khalate Karuna | Thayi Thayi Padatase ||77||

 Meaning: Its heart was devoid of thought, and its face looked like a ghost (Pishacha). It kept its head down and stumbled everywhere.

Ovi 78: Vruddha Apana Viragahina | Kalaha Dvesha Sange Gheuna | Vama Hati Dharoni Shishna | Yet Brahmayasanmukha ||78|| 

Meaning: Though old, it had no detachment. It brought conflict and hatred along. It approached Brahma in a very indecent and shameless manner.

Ovi 79: Jivha Dharoni Ujave Hati | Nache Keli Atipriti | Doshottare Kari Stuti | Punyapapasammishra ||79|| 

Meaning: Holding its tongue with its right hand, it danced with great pleasure. It praised Brahma with words full of faults and a mix of sin and merit.
