Meaning: Hearing the request of the disciple (Namadharaka), Sage Siddha said: "Excellent, excellent is your devotion! May your love for the Guru's feet grow forever."

Meaning: "Listen, O jewel among disciples! Blessed is your speech. Your question has reminded me of the entire history from the beginning to the end."

Meaning: "You have asked a very noble question. I shall now explain to you with wisdom the ancient history of Sage Atri since the creation of the universe."

Meaning: In the beginning, there was no creation; everything was filled with water. Therefore, the Vedas call this state 'Apo-Narayana' (Narayana as water).

Meaning: Lord Narayana pervaded everywhere as water. Through His divine will, He created the 'Hiranyagarbha' (Golden Egg) containing the qualities of the universe.

Ovi 6: Techi Brahmanda Nama Jahale | Rajogune Brahmasi Nirmile | Hiranyagarbha Nama Pavale | Devatavarsha Eka Hote ||6|| 

Meaning: That egg came to be known as the Universe (Brahmanda). From it, Lord Brahma was created through 'Rajoguna'. He remained in that Golden Egg for one divine year.

Meaning: That Universe-egg then split into two parts. One part became the Earth, and the other became the Heavens.

Meaning: Lord Brahma emerged there and created the fourteen worlds, the ten directions, the mind, speech, time, and emotions like desire and anger.

Meaning: Marichi, Atri, Angirasa, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu, and Vasishtha—these seven great sages were born from Brahma, the Creator.

Meaning: "Among the seven, Sage Atri is the root of the Guru lineage. Listen with a focused mind, O fortunate Namadharaka."

Meaning: The wife of Sage Atri was named Anasuya. She was the crest-jewel among chaste women and was truly an incarnation of the Mother of the Universe (Jagadamba).

Meaning: Who can describe her beauty and virtues? How can I describe the form of one whose son is the Moon himself?

Meaning: She served her husband with such devotion that the Gods became terrified. They feared she might seize the throne of Heaven with her spiritual power.

Meaning: Indra and the other Gods met the Trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva) and described the extraordinary power and conduct of Sage Atri’s wife.

Meaning: Indra said, "O Lords! Let me describe to you in detail the conduct of the chaste woman Anasuya."

Meaning: "She serves her husband with body, mind, and speech. She welcomes guests with great joy and never turns anyone away empty-handed."

Meaning: "Seeing her power, even the Sun in the sky is afraid. Fearing he might cause her heat, he shines very mildly."

Meaning: "Fire has become cool out of fear, and the Wind blows very gently around her, being terrified of her spiritual strength."

Ovi 20: Bhumi Apana Bhiuni Dekha | Namra Jahali Paduka | Shapa Deil Mhanoni Aika | Samasta Amhi Bhitaso ||20||

 Meaning: "Even the Earth has become humble like a sandal under her feet. We are all afraid that she might curse us."

Ovi 21: Neno Gheyil Kavana Sthana | Konya Devache Hirona | Ekhadate Vara Deta Jana | Tohi Amute Maru Shake ||21|| 

Meaning: "We do not know whose position she might take. If she grants a boon to someone, that person might become powerful enough to destroy us."

Meaning: "O Lords of the Universe! Please find a solution. We have come to you because we fear losing our place in Heaven."

Ovi 23: Na Karal Jari Upaya Yasi | Sēva Karu Amhi Tisi | Tiche Dwari Aharnishi | Rahu Chitta Dharoniya ||23|| 

Meaning: "If you do not intervene, we will have to become her servants and stay at her door day and night."

Ovi 24: Aise Aikoni Trayamurti | Mahakrodhe Kapati | Chala Jau Pahu Kaisi Sati | Mhanati Ahe Pativrata ||24|| 

Meaning: Hearing this, the Trinity trembled with (staged) anger. They said, "Let us go and see how great this chaste woman really is."

Meaning: They set out, saying they would either break her vow or send her to the abode of Yama (the God of Death).

 Meaning: To test her purity, the Trinity disguised themselves as wandering alms-seekers (Bhikshukas) and arrived at Sage Atri’s hermitage as guests.

Meaning: While the Sage was away for his daily rituals, the Trinity appeared. They called out to Anasuya, saying, "We have arrived as guests."

Ovi 28: Kshudhe Bahu Pidona | Amhi Alo Brahmana | Twarit Dyave Sati Anna | Athava Jau Anika Thaya ||28||

 Meaning: "We are Brahmins suffering from great hunger. O Sati, give us food immediately, or we shall leave for another place."

Ovi 29: Sada Tumche Ashramant | Santarpana Abhyagata | Aiko Ali Kirti Vikhyata | Mhanoni Alo Anasuye ||29|| 

Meaning: "Anasuya, we have heard of the great hospitality of this ashram, which is why we have come here."

Ovi 30: Ichhabhojanadana Tumhi | Deta Mhanoni Aikile Amhi | Thakoani Alo Yachi Kami | Ichhabhojana Magavaya ||30|| 

Meaning: "We heard that you grant 'Ichha-Bhojan' (food as desired). We have come specifically to ask for such a meal."

 Meaning: Hearing this, Anasuya immediately bowed to them. She made them sit and washed their feet with respect.

Ovi 32: Arghya Padya Deuni Tyansi | Gandhakshatapushpesi | Savecha Mhanatase Harshi | Arogana Sarije ||32|| 

Meaning: After offering them water and flowers, she joyfully invited them to begin their meal.

Ovi 33: Atithi Mhene Taye Vēli | Karoni Alo Angholi | Rushi Yeti Bahuta Vēli | Twarit Amha Bhojana Dyave ||33|| 

Meaning: The guests said, "We have already bathed. The Sage will take a long time to return; therefore, serve us the food now."

Ovi 34: Vasana Pahoni Atithite | Kaya Kele Pativrate | Thaya Ghatale Twarite | Baisakara Kela Dekha ||34|| 

Meaning: Seeing the desire of the guests, the chaste woman immediately laid out the plates and requested them to be seated.

Ovi 35: Baisavoniya Patavari | Ghrutesi Patra Abhidhari | Ghevoni Ali Apana Kshiri | Shaka Paka Taye Vēli ||35|| 

Meaning: She served them rice with ghee, milk, vegetables, and other delicacies.

Ovi 36: Tisi Mhanati Aho Nari | Amhi Atithi Alo Duri | Dekhoni Tujhe Swarupa Sundari | Abhishta Manasi Anika Vase ||36|| 

Meaning: Then they said, "O beautiful woman! We have come from afar. Seeing your beauty, another desire has arisen in our minds."

Ovi 37: Nagna Hovoni Amhansai | Anna Vadhave Pariyēsi | Athava Kaya Niropa Deshi | Amhi Jau Nahi Tari ||37|| 

Meaning: "You must serve us food while being completely naked. Tell us if you agree, or we shall leave."

Ovi 38: Aikoni Dvijanche Vachana | Anasuya Kari Chintana | Ale Vipra Pahavaya Mana | Karanika Purusha Hotila ||38|| 

Meaning: Hearing the words of the Brahmins, Anasuya thought: "These men have come to test me. They must be divine beings with a specific purpose."

Meaning: The crest-jewel of chaste women thought: "If a guest leaves disappointed, it is a great sin. How can I disobey their request?"

Ovi 40: Majhe Mana Ase Nirmala | Kaya Karil Manmatha Khala | Patiche Ase Tapafala | Taril Maja Mhanatase ||40|| 

Meaning: "My mind is pure. What can the wicked god of lust do to me? My husband's penance will surely protect me."

Ovi 41: Aise Vicharoni Manasi | Tathastu Mhene Tyansi | Bhojana Karave Swastha Chittesi | Nagna Vadhin Mhanatase ||41|| 

Meaning: Having decided, she said 'Tathastu' (So be it). "Eat with a peaceful mind; I shall serve you as you wish."

Ovi 42: Pakasthana Jauni Apana | Chintana Kari Patiche Charana | Vastra Fedoni Nagna | Mhene Atithi Bale Majhi ||42|| 

Meaning: She went to the kitchen and meditated on her husband's feet. Removing her clothes, she declared, "These guests are my little children!"

Ovi 43: Nagna Hovoni Sati Dekha | Gheuni Ali Annodaka | Tava Techi Jhale Balaka | Thayanpudhe Lolati ||43|| 

Meaning: As she approached them naked with food, the three Gods instantly turned into tiny infants, crawling and playing before the plates!

Ovi 44: Bale Dekhoni Anasuya | Bhayachakita Hovoniya | Punarapi Vastre Nesoniya | Ali Taya Balakanjavali ||44|| 

Meaning: Seeing the babies, Anasuya was amazed. She put on her clothes and went near the infants.

Ovi 45: Rudana Kariti Tinhi Bale | Anasuya Rahavi Vēlovēla | Kshudharta Jhali Kevala | Mhanoni Kadiye Ghetase ||45|| 

Meaning: The three babies began to cry. Realizing they were hungry, Anasuya comforted them and picked them up.

Ovi 46: Kadiye Ghevoni Balakansi | Stanapana Karavi Atiharshi | Eka Sandoani Ekashi | Kshuda Nivarana Karitase ||46|| 

Meaning: She joyfully breastfed them one by one, satisfying their hunger with her motherly love.

Ovi 47: Pahe Pa Navala Kaya Ghadale | Trayamurtichi Jhali Bale | Stanapana Matre Toshale | Tapafala Aise Pativrateche ||47|| 

Meaning: Look at the miracle! The Trinity became her babies and were satisfied by her milk. Such was the power of her chastity!

 Meaning: The hunger of those who hold the fourteen worlds and the seven oceans in their bellies was satisfied by the milk of this chaste woman!

Meaning: How miraculous that the hunger of Brahma, the creator of the universe, was appeased by her breastfeeding!

Ovi 50: Bhalaksha Karpura Gaura | Panchavaktra Kalagnirudra | Stanapana Karavi Anasuya Sundara | Tapasvi Atri Aisa ||50|| 

Meaning: Even the five-faced Lord Shiva, the destroyer, was nursed by the beautiful Anasuya. Such was the merit of Sage Atri's penance.

Ovi 51: Anasuya Atriramani | Navhati Aishi Koni | Trayamurtichi Jhali Janani | Khyati Jhali Tribhuvanant ||51|| 

Meaning: There was no woman like Anasuya. She became the mother of the Trinity, and her fame spread across the three worlds.

Ovi 52: Kadiye Ghevoni Balakansi | Khelavitase Tighansi | Ghaloniya Palanyasi | Paryande Gai Taye Vēli ||52|| 

Meaning: She played with the three infants and, placing them in a cradle, sang sweet lullabies (Paryande) to them.

Ovi 53: Paryande Gaya Nanapari | Upanishadartha Atikusari | Atiulhase Sapta Swari | Sambokhitase Trimurtisi ||53|| 

Meaning: She sang various lullabies embedded with the essence of the Upanishads, soothing the Trinity with her melodious voice.

Ovi 54: Ituke Hota Taye Vēli | Madhyanhaveala Atithikali | Atri Rushi Atinirmali | Ala Apule Ashrama ||54|| 

Meaning: At that moment, during the noon hour, the pure Sage Atri returned to his hermitage.

Ovi 55: Gharamaji Avalokita | Tava Dekhili Anasuya Gata | Kaichi Bale Aise Mhanata | Pusatase Striyesi ||55|| 

Meaning: Looking inside, he saw Anasuya singing to the cradle. "Whose babies are these?" he asked his wife.

Ovi 56: Tine Sangitala Vruttanta | Rushi Gyani Ase Pahata | Trayamurti Hechi Mhanata | Namaskara Karitase ||56||

 Meaning: She told him everything. Being a wise sage, Atri realized they were the Trinity and bowed to them.

Ovi 57: Namaskarita Atri Dekha | Santosha Vishnuvrushanayaka | Ananda Jhala Chaturmukha | Prasanna Jhale Taye Vēli ||57|| 

Meaning: As Atri bowed, Vishnu, Shiva, and Brahma were pleased and revealed their divine presence.

Ovi 58: Bala Rahile Palanyesi | Nijamurti Thakale Sanmukhesi | Sadhu Sadhu Atri Rushi | Anasuya Satya Pativrata ||58|| 

Meaning: While the babies remained in the cradle, the Gods stood before them in their original forms. They praised them, saying, "Noble is Sage Atri, and truly chaste is Anasuya!"

Ovi 59: Tushtalo Tujhe Bhaktisi | Maga Mani Vara Ichhisi | Atri Mhene Satisi | Je Vanchisi Maga Ata ||59|| 

Meaning: "We are pleased with your devotion. Ask for any boon you desire." Atri told his wife to ask for whatever she wished.

Ovi 60: Anasuya Mhene Rushisi | Praneshvara Tuchi Hosi | Deva Patale Tumchya Bhaktisi | Putra Maga Tumhi Ata ||60||

 Meaning: Anasuya said to the Sage, "You are my lord. The Gods have come because of your devotion; therefore, you should ask for sons."

Ovi 61: Tighe Balaka Majhe Ghari | Rahave Majhe PutraparI | Hechi Magato Nirdhari | Trayamurti Apana Ekarupa ||61|| 

Meaning: Atri requested, "May these three babies stay in my house as my sons. I ask that the Trinity remain here as one form."

Ovi 62: Aise Vachana Aikoni | Vara Didhala Murti Tinhi | Rahati Balake Mhanoni | Apana Gela Nijalayasi ||62|| 

Meaning: Hearing this, the three Gods granted the boon. Saying "the children shall remain," the original deities returned to their divine abodes.

Ovi 63: Trimurti Rahile Tyanche Ghari | Anasuya Poshi Balakapari | Name Thēvili Pritikari | Trivarganchi Pariyēsa ||63|| 

Meaning: The Trinity remained in their house, and Anasuya raised them as her own. Listen to the lovely names she gave the three.

Ovi 64: Bramhamurti Chandra Jhala | Vishnumurti Datta Kevala | Ishwara To Durvasa Nama Pavala | Tighe Putra Anasuyeche ||64|| 

Meaning: The essence of Brahma became Chandra (the Moon), Vishnu became Datta (Dattatreya), and Shiva became the Sage Durvasa. These were Anasuya's three sons.

Ovi 65: Durvasa Ani Chandra Dekha | Ubhe Rahuni Matesanmukha | Niropa Magati Kautuka | Jau Tapa Nijasthana ||65|| 

Meaning: Durvasa and Chandra stood before their mother and affectionately asked for permission to leave for their respective places of penance.

Ovi 66: Durvasa Mhene Janani | Amhi Rushi Anushthani | Jau Tirthe Acharoni | Mhanoni Niropa Ghetala ||66|| 

Meaning: Durvasa said, "Mother, we are sages. We shall go on a pilgrimage to perform rituals," and took his leave.

Ovi 67: Chandra Mhene Aho Mate | Niropa Dyava Amha Twarite | Chandramandali Vasa Mate | Nitya Darshana Tumche Charani ||67|| 

Meaning: Chandra said, "Mother, permit me to go. I shall reside in the lunar sphere, but I will always bow at your feet."

Ovi 68: Tisara Datta Vishnumurti | Asel Tumche Dharoni Chitti | Trayamurti Tochi Nishchiti | Mhanoni Sangati Tiyesi ||68|| 

Meaning: They told her, "The third son, Datta (Vishnu), will remain with you in your heart. He is truly the combined essence of the Trinity."

Ovi 69: Trayamurti Jana Tochi Datta | Sarva Vishnumaya Jagata | Rahil Tumche Dharoni Chitta | Vishnumurti Dattatreya ||69|| 

Meaning: "Know that Datta is the Trinity. The whole world is pervaded by Vishnu. This Lord Dattatreya will stay with you forever."

Ovi 70: Durvasa Chandra Niropa Gheuna | Gela Swasthana Anushthanasi | Anasuyeche Ghari Dekha | Trayamurti Rahili Murti Eka ||70|| 

Meaning: Durvasa and Chandra left for their penance. In Anasuya’s house, the Trinity remained as one manifest form—Lord Dattatreya.

Meaning: This one name is Dattatreya, and He is the root-seat of the Holy Guru lineage.

Ovi 72: Aishapari Siddha Dekha | Katha Sange Namadharaka | Santoshe Prashna Kari Aneka | Pusatase Siddhasi ||72|| 

Meaning: In this way, Sage Siddha narrated the story to Namadharaka, who joyfully asked many more questions.

Ovi 73: Jaya Siddha Yogishwara | Bhaktajanamatnohara | Taraka Sansarasagara | Gyanamurti Krupasindho ||73|| 

Meaning: "Glory to you, O Siddha Yogishwara! You who enchant the minds of devotees and save us from the ocean of worldly existence!"

Ovi 74: Tujheni Prasade Maja | Gyana Upajale Sahaja | Taraka Amucha Yogiraja | Vinanti Majhi Pariyēsa ||74|| 

Meaning: "Through your grace, knowledge has dawned upon me naturally. O King of Yogis, our savior, please hear my prayer."

Ovi 75: Dattatreyacha Avataru | Sangitala Purvaparu | Pudhe Avatara Jahale Guru | Kavanepari Niropije ||75||

 Meaning: "You have told the story of Lord Dattatreya’s incarnation. Now, please describe how the subsequent Guru incarnations took place."

Ovi 76: Mhene Saraswatigangadharu | Pudhila Kathecha Vistaru | Aikata Hoye Manoharu | Sakalabhishte Sadhati ||76|| 

Meaning: Saraswati Gangadhara says: "The following story is very beautiful. By listening to it, all your noble desires will be fulfilled."
