The Resonance of Devotion

Chapter 6 of Shri Guru Charitra is an exploration of the sacred geography of India and the power of sound. While the previous chapters introduced us to the Guru's incarnation, this chapter explains why the Lord chose Gokarna as His abode.

Meaning: Namadharaka said to Sage Siddha, "O Swami, you are a light in the darkness. You have enlightened us by explaining the beginning and the end of the Guru's lineage."

Meaning: "Why did the Lord, being the Trinity Himself, go on a pilgrimage? What is so special about Gokarna that he chose to go there?"

Meaning: "There are countless holy places in the world. Why did Lord Dattatreya (Shripad Shri Vallabha) leave them all and show such love for Gokarna?"

Meaning: Sage Siddha replied, "Listen, O crest-jewel among disciples! Your questions have brought joy to my heart. I shall narrate the life of the Guru to you."

Meaning: "Please explain it in detail with your grace," said Namadharaka, holding the Sage's feet with love.

Meaning: Pleased by Namadharaka’s devotion, Siddha began to narrate the Guru Charitra in great detail.

Meaning: "Because of you, I too feel blessed to speak of the Guru’s life. I feel a great urge to share these sacred stories."

 Meaning: "You asked why the Trinity, after incarnating, traveled to holy places and specifically why He visited Gokarna."

Meaning: "The Lord travels to holy places to bless His devotees, to initiate them into the spiritual path, and to give them divine teachings."

Meaning: "Gokarna is a special place where Lord Shiva resides eternally. Therefore, the formless Trinity (in the form of the Guru) dwells there."

Meaning: "I will now tell you the incomparable greatness of Gokarna. Listen with a focused and steady mind, O Namadharaka."

Meaning: "I will tell you the origin and the end of this pilgrimage site. It is extraordinary to hear because of the great boons granted there in ancient times."

Meaning: "The Mahabaleshwar Linga there is a self-manifested (Swayambhu) form of Shiva. Listen to the story of how Lord Ganesha (Lambodara) established it."

Meaning: The disciple asked, "Swami, please tell me in detail how Lord Ganesha (Vighneshwara) installed that Linga."

Meaning: Pleased with the request, the Sage began the story of Mahabaleshwar from the very beginning.

Meaning: "The wife of the sage Pulastya was named Kaikesi. She was a great devotee of Lord Shiva and worshiped Him constantly."

Meaning: "She would not eat without performing Shiva Puja. One day, she could not find a Linga for her daily worship."

Meaning: "Fearing her vow would break, she made a Linga out of clay and worshipped it with immense joy and devotion."

Meaning: "Her son was the fierce Ravana (Dashashira). He arrived there quickly to see his mother."

Meaning: "He bowed to her and asked, 'What are you worshipping?' She explained that she was worshipping a clay Linga."

Meaning: "Ravana said, 'You are my mother, yet you worship a Linga of clay? This is a sign of our misfortune!'"

Meaning: "Ravana vowed to his mother that he would soon bring Lord Shiva (Umaramana) and Mount Kailash to Lanka."

Meaning: "The demon then departed with the speed of thought, telling her to stop worshipping clay as he would bring the real deity."

Meaning: "He reached Kailash, the beautiful white mountain. In his pride, he used his twenty arms to shake the mountain with great force."

Meaning: "The entire abode of Kailash shook. Ravana tried to uproot it, placing his ten heads beneath it to lift it up."

Meaning: "As he applied his full strength, the seven netherworlds (Patala) trembled from the force of his effort."

Meaning: "The great serpent Shesha moved his hood in alarm, and the Divine Tortoise (Kurma) trembled. All the gods were terrified, and the city of Indra shook."

Meaning: "Heaven, the world of Brahma (Satyaloka), and the world of Vishnu (Vaikuntha) all shook. People cried out that the Great Dissolution (Pralaya) had arrived."

Meaning: "The celestial beings of Kailash were terrified. Even Goddess Parvati (Girija) was frightened and rushed to Lord Shiva."

Meaning: "She asked, 'What has happened to Kailash? The entire assembly is shaking and feels as if it will collapse!'"

Meaning: "'There is chaos in the city, yet You sit calmly! Please do something quickly,' she pleaded, falling at His feet."

Ovi 34: Ishwara Mhene Girijesi | Na Kari Chinta Manasi | Ravana Majha Bhakta Pariyēsi | Khelatase Bhaktine ||34|| 

Meaning: "Lord Shiva said, 'Do not worry. Ravana is my devotee, and he is only "playing" with the mountain out of his devotion.'"

Meaning: "Hearing this, Parvati bowed and requested, 'O Wielder of the Trident, please protect all the gods and this abode!'"

Meaning: Hearing Parvati's plea, Lord Shiva pressed the mountain down with His left hand. Ravana’s ten heads and twenty arms were crushed under the weight of Mount Kailash.

Ovi 37: Chinta Kari Mani Bahuta | Shiva Shiva Aise Uchcharita | Dhyatase Stotra Karita | Sharanagata Raksha Mhoni ||37|| 

Meaning: In great pain, Ravana began to chant "Shiva, Shiva!" He started composing hymns (stotras) and prayed, "O Lord, protect this surrendered soul!"

Ovi 38: Trahi Trahi Pinakapani | Jagadrakshakashiromani | Sharana Alo Tujhe Charani | Marana Kaiche Bhaktasi ||38|| 

Meaning: "Save me, save me, O Wielder of the Pinaka bow! You are the crown jewel of the universe's protectors. I have surrendered at Your feet; how can a devotee face death?"

Meaning: The innocent and compassionate Lord Shiva, hearing his prayer, immediately lifted His hand and released Ravana from the pressure out of mercy.

Ovi 40: Sutla Tethuni Lankeshwara | Stotra Karitase Apara | Swashire Chhadoni Parikare | Tantu Lavile Nija Antre ||40|| 

Meaning: Once freed, the King of Lanka began an immense prayer. He cut off his own heads to make a musical instrument (Veena) and used his own nerves (intestines) as strings.

Ovi 41: Veda Sahastra Ekavachani | Varnakramadi Vistaroni | Samaveda Atigayane | Samasta Rage Gatase ||41||

 Meaning: He recited thousands of Vedic mantras and sang the Samaveda (the Veda of music) in various classical melodies (Ragas).

Ovi 42: Gana Rasaswarayukta | Gayana Kari Lankanatha | Tayanchi Name Vikhyata | Sangen Aika Ekachitte ||42|| 

Meaning: The Lord of Lanka sang with perfect rhythm (Gana), emotion (Rasa), and notes (Swara). Listen carefully as I tell you their famous names.

Ovi 43: Athahi Gana Prakhyata | Uchcharitase Lankanatha | Magana Brahmana Prakhyata | Nagana Kshatri Vishesha ||43|| 

Meaning: He chanted the eight classical meters (Ganas). Magana is associated with Brahmins, and Nagana with the warrior class (Kshatriyas).

Ovi 44: Bhagana Vaishya Dhyanesi | Tagana Shudravarneesi | Jagana Daitya Pariyēsi | Ragana Pratyaksha Chyutagune ||44|| 

Meaning: Bhagana belongs to the Vaishyas, Tagana to the Shudras, Jagana to the demons, and Ragana is linked to destructive qualities.

Ovi 45: Sagana Turungarupesi | Yagana Shuddha Pariyēsi | Vistarita Gayanesi | Lankapati Ravana ||45|| 

Meaning: Sagana has the form of a horse, and Yagana is considered pure. Thus, Ravana expanded his musical performance.

Ovi 46: Gayana Karita Navarasesi | Name Sangen Pariyēsi | Shanta Bhayanaka Adbhutesi | Shringara Hasya Karunarase ||46|| 

Meaning: He sang using the nine emotions (Navarasa): Shanta (Peace), Bhayanaka (Terror), Adbhuta (Wonder), Shringara (Love), Hasya (Laughter), and Karuna (Compassion).

Ovi 47: Raudra Veera Bibhatsesi | Gayana Kari Ati Ulhasi | Venu Vajavi Saptasweresi | Dhyanapurvaka Vidhine ||47|| 

Meaning: He also used Raudra (Fury), Veera (Heroism), and Bibhatsa (Disgust). He played the flute with the seven notes (Saptaswara) with ritualistic meditation.

Ovi 48: Jambudvipa Vasa Jyasi | Shadjaswara Nama Pariyēsi | Kanthahuni Upaja Jyasi | Mayuraswara Alapita ||48|| 

Meaning: The first note is Shadja (Sa), residing in Jambudvipa. It originates from the throat and resonates like the cry of a peacock.

Ovi 49: Uttamavanshi Upaja Jyasi | Girvanakuli Brahmavanshi | Padmapatra Varna Pariyēsi | Vanhi Devata Shringara Rase ||49|| 

Meaning: Born of a noble lineage, its color is like a lotus petal. Its deity is Agni (Fire), and it evokes the Shringara Rasa.

Ovi 50: Dwitiya Swara Rushabhasi | Janma Plaksha Dwipasi | Upaja Hrudayasthanesi | Chashaswara Alapita ||50|| 

Meaning: The second note is Rushabha (Re), born in Plaksha Dwipa. It originates from the heart and sounds like the Chasha bird.

Ovi 51: Prakhyata Janma Kshatravanshi | Virajavarna Yamadevetesi | Krida Adbhuta Rasa Aishi | Veena Vajavi Ravana ||51||

 Meaning: It belongs to the warrior lineage, its deity is Yama, and it evokes the Adbhuta (Wonder) Rasa. Thus played Ravana on his Veena.

Ovi 52: Trutiya Swara Gandharesi | Gayana Kari Ravana Pariyēsi | Kushadvipa Vasa Jyasi | Nasikasthana Avadhara ||52||

 Meaning: The third note is Gandhara (Ga). It resides in Kusha Dwipa and originates from the nasal cavity.

Ovi 53: Ajaswara Alapatyasi | Girvana Kula Vaishyavanshi | Suvarnavarna Kantesi | Chandradevata Adbhuta Rase ||53|| 

Meaning: It sounds like a goat, belongs to the Vaishya class, has a golden hue, and its deity is the Moon.

Ovi 54: Madhyama Swara Chaturthaka | Kraunchadvipa Vasa Aik | Urasthana Ukta Uchchari Mukhe | Kraunchasware Alapita ||54|| 

Meaning: The fourth note is Madhyama (Ma), residing in Krauncha Dwipa. It originates from the chest and sounds like the Krauncha bird.

Ovi 55: Girvanakula Brahmavansha | Kundavarna Rupa Surasa | Dhyana Kari Lankadhisha | Lakshmi Devata Karuna Rasa ||55||

 Meaning: It is of Brahmin lineage, white like a Kunda flower. Ravana meditated on it; its deity is Lakshmi and it evokes compassion.

Ovi 56: Shalmali Dwipa Bhumisi | Janma Panchamaswarasi | Kanthi Upajoni Nadasi | Kokilasware Gatase ||56||

 Meaning: The fifth note, Panchama (Pa), was born in Shalmali Dwipa. It rises from the throat and sounds like a Cuckoo.

Ovi 57: Dhyana Kari Taya Swarasi | Upaja Jhala Pitruvanshi | Krushnavarna Rupa Tyasi | Gananatha Deva Hasyarase ||57|| 

Meaning: Ravana meditated on this black-hued note of the ancestral lineage. Its deity is Ganesha, and it evokes laughter.

Ovi 58: Shwetadvipa Janma Khyata | Swara Ase Nama Dhaivata | Lalata Sthana Nada Vyakta | Dardurasware Alapi Dekha ||58|| 

Meaning: The sixth note is Dhaivata (Dha), born in Shwetadvipa. It originates from the forehead and sounds like a frog.

Ovi 59: Aisa Dhaivata Swarasi | Bibhatsa Rasa Atiulhasi | Gaya Ravana Pariyēsi | Ishwaraprati Bhaktine ||59|| 

Meaning: Ravana sang this Dhaivata note, which evokes Disgust (Bibhatsa), with great fervor for Lord Shiva.

Ovi 60: Pushkara Dwipa Upaje Tyasi | Nishada Swara Nama Pariyēsi | Utpatti Talavya Sandhisi | Hastisware Gatase ||60|| 

Meaning: The seventh note is Nishada (Ni), born in Pushkara Dwipa. It comes from the palate and sounds like an elephant.

Ovi 61: Asuravansha Vaishyakuli | Kalpa Shuddha Varna Patali | Tumbara Muni Devata Javali | Surya Devata Avadhari ||61|| 

Meaning: The note Nishada (Ni) belongs to the Asura lineage and the Vaishya class. Its color is pale red (Patala), and its presiding deities are Sage Tumburu and the Sun God.

Ovi 62: Bhayanaka Rasa Dekha | Charchi Vyakula Ase Nika | Yenepari Sapta Swarika | Gayana Kari Lankanatha ||62|| 

Meaning: This note evokes the emotion of Terror (Bhayanaka). In this systematic way, Ravana, the Lord of Lanka, performed his musical worship using all seven notes.

Ovi 63: Ragasahita Raginisi | Gayana Kari Samavedasi | Shriragadi Vasantasi | Alapa Kari Dashashira ||63|| 

Meaning: Along with the Ragas (melodies) and Raginis (sub-melodies), he sang the Samaveda. Ravana performed detailed elaborations (Alapa) of Ragas like Shriraga and Vasanta.

Ovi 64: Bhairavadi Panchamaragi | Natanarayana Megharagi | Gayana Kari Abhyasayogi | Lankanatha Shivaprati ||64|| 

Meaning: As a master of musical practice, he sang Ragas such as Bhairava, Panchama, Natanarayana, and Megha for Lord Shiva.

Ovi 65: Gaudi Kolhala Andhali | Dravidaragi Kaushikamali | Devagandhara Ananadali | Gayana Kari Lankanatha ||65|| 

Meaning: With divine joy, he performed various melodies like Gaudi, Kolhala, Dravida, Kaushika, and Devagandhara.

Ovi 66: Dhanashriya Varadisi | Ramakali Manjiresi | Gaudaki Dashakshi Harisi | Gayana Kari Lankeshwara ||66||

 Meaning: The King of Lanka also sang Dhanashri, Varadi, Ramakali, Manjiri, Gaudaki, and others with great expertise.

Ovi 67: Bhairavi Gurjarisahita | Velavali Raga Lalita | Karnataki Hansayukta | Gayana Kari Dashashira ||67|| 

Meaning: Ravana then performed Bhairavi, Gurjari, Velavali, Lalita, and the rhythmic Karnataki and Hansa ragas.

Ovi 68: Trataki Motaki Dekha | Tankakshi Sudha Nataka | Saidhava Malaki Aika | Gayana Kari Lankanatha ||68|| 

Meaning: He further displayed his mastery by singing Trataki, Tankakshi, Sudha, and Malaki melodies.

Ovi 69: Bangali Raga Soratisi | Kamabodha Madhumadhavisi | Devakriya Bhupalisi | Gayana Kari Dashanana ||69|| 

Meaning: The ten-headed Ravana sang Bangali, Sorati, Kamabodha, Madhumadhavi, and the early morning Raga Bhupali.

Ovi 70: Ragavallabha Madhurisi | Ravheri Raga Harshi | Vihangadatri Chandisi | Vasavijadi Ragane ||70|| 

Meaning: He sang the sweet Madhuri, the joyful Ravheri, Chandi, and several other complex musical structures.

Ovi 71: Shira Kapun Apule Dekha | Yantra Kele Karakamalika | Shira Kadun Tantuka | Ravaneshvara Gatase ||71|| 

Meaning: He literally used his severed heads as the resonator of his instrument and his own veins as the strings; thus did Ravana perform his music.

Ovi 72: Samayasamayi Alapana | Kari Dashashira Apana | Pratahkali Kari Gayana | Ashtaraga Pariyēsa ||72|| 

Meaning: Ravana performed the Alapa (melodic expansion) strictly according to the time of day. Listen to the eight Ragas he sang at dawn.

Ovi 73: Madhyamaraga Veloveli | Dashankabhairava Kari Bhupali | Malhara Dhanashri Bangali | Pratahkali Gatase ||73||

 Meaning: At dawn, he sang Madhyama, Bhairava, Bhupali, Malhar, Dhanashri, and Bangali.

Ovi 74: Baradi Lalita Gurjarasi | Gaudakri Ahiri Kaushikesi | Madhyahnasamayi Gayanasi | Ravana Kari Pariyēsa ||74|| 

Meaning: During the noon hours, he performed Ragas such as Baradi, Lalita, Gurjari, and Kaushika.

Ovi 75: Kuranji Todi Malashriesi | Dashanka Panchama Pariyēsi | Aprahna Vela Atiharshi | Ishwaraprati Gatase ||75|| 

Meaning: In the afternoon, with great delight, he sang Kuranji, Todi, Malashri, and Panchama for the Lord.

Ovi 76: Chari Prakara Gaudiyesi | Ramakali Shriragasi | Devakipat Manjiresi | Vasanturage Rutukali ||76|| 

Meaning: He performed four types of Gaudi, Ramakali, and Shriraga. During the spring season, he specialized in Raga Vasanta.

Ovi 77: Aise Chhattis Ragesi | Gayana Kari Samavedasi | Nirvanarupa Bhaktisi | Chandramauli Sambachiye ||77|| 

Meaning: In this way, using thirty-six Ragas, he sang the Samaveda. This was his supreme, absolute devotion to Lord Shiva (Chandramauli).

Ovi 78: Ravanache Bhaktisi | Prasanna Ishwara Twaritesi | Nijarupa Atiharshi | Ubha Rahila Sanmukha ||78|| 

Meaning: Pleased by Ravana's intense devotion, Lord Shiva appeared immediately. In His true divine form and with great joy, He stood before Ravana.

Ovi 79: Panchavaktra Trinetresi | Ubha Rahoni Santoshi | Kaya Ichha Tujhe Manasi | Maga Vara Mhanatase ||79|| 

Meaning: Showing His five faces and three eyes, the Lord happily said, "What is the desire of your heart? Ask for a boon!"

 Meaning: "I will give you whatever you ask for. Live happily with me," offered Ravana.

 Meaning: The boy replied, "There are many demons in Lanka. We are simple forest children; they will eat us as soon as we arrive!"

Ovi 170: Na Yeu Tujhiya Nagarasi | Soda Jau Gharasi | Kshudhe Pidato Bahuvasi | Mhononi Bhakshtito Bhatuke ||170||

 Meaning: "I won't come to your city. Let me go home; I am very hungry, which is why I am eating these snacks."

 Meaning: Hearing this, Ravana tried to persuade the boy. "Just hold this Linga for a moment while I finish my prayers."

Ovi 172: Balaka Vinavi Tayasi | Na Dhari Linga Pariyēsi | Mi Brahmachari Aranyavasi | Upadravu Nako Mhanatase ||172|| 

Meaning: The boy pleaded, "I won't hold it. I am a simple forest dweller; do not trouble me."

Ovi 173: Tava Linga Ase Jada | Mi Pana Bala Ase Veda | Na Ghe Linga Jau De Soda | Dharma Ghadela Tujlagi ||173|| 

Meaning: "Your Linga is very heavy, and I am a small, innocent child. Let me go; it will be a virtuous act on your part."

Ovi 174: Nanapari Sambodhita | Linga Deta Lankanatha | Sandhya Karavaya Apana Twarita | Samudratiri Baisala ||174|| 

Meaning: After much persuasion, Ravana handed over the Linga and sat by the seashore to quickly start his prayers.

Ovi 175: Brahmachari Tayasi | Ubha Vinavitase Ravanasi | Jada Jhalia Apanasi | Thevin Twarita Bhumivari ||175|| 

Meaning: Standing there, the boy warned Ravana, "If it becomes too heavy for me, I will put it on the ground immediately."

Ovi 176: Vela Tini Pariyēsi | Bolavin Tumhansi | Vela Lagalia Pariyēsi | Apana Thevin Bhumivari ||176|| 

Meaning: "I will call you three times. If you are delayed, I will place it on the earth."

Ovi 177: Aisa Nirdhara Karoni | Ubha Ganesha Linga Gheuni | Samasta Deva Vimani | Baisoni Pahati Kautuke ||177||

 Meaning: With this agreement, Ganesha stood holding the Linga, while all the gods watched the spectacle from their celestial chariots.

Ovi 178: Arghyasamayi Ravanasi | Bolavi Ganesha Pariyēsi | Jada Jhale Linga Amhansi | Satvara Gha Ga Mhanatase ||178|| 

Meaning: At the time of the first offering (Arghya), Ganesha called out, "It's getting heavy! Come and take it quickly!"

Ovi 179: Nyasapurvaka Arghya Dekha | Ravana Kari Ati Viveka | Hata Dakhavi Balaka | Yeto Rahe Mhononi ||179|| 

Meaning: Ravana, performing his rituals with deep focus, gestured with his hand for the boy to wait, signaling that he was coming.

Ovi 180: Anika Kshanabhara Rahoni | Ganesha Bole Vela Doni | Jada Jhale Mhanoni | Shighra Yave Mhanatase ||180||

 Meaning: After a moment, Ganesha called out for the second time, "It is too heavy now! Come fast!"

Ovi 181: Na Ye Ravana Dhyanastha | Ganesha Ase Vicharita | Samasta Devante Sakshi Karita | Linga Thevit Bhumivari ||181||

 Meaning: Ravana, lost in meditation, did not come. Ganesha then made all the gods witnesses and placed the Linga on the ground.

Ovi 182: Shrivishnute Smaroni | Linga Thevile Sthaponi | Santosha Jahala Gagani | Pushpe Varshati Suravara ||182|| 

Meaning: Remembering Lord Vishnu, He installed the Linga. The heavens rejoiced, and the gods showered flowers from above.

Ovi 183: Arghya Devoni Lankeshwara | Nighoni Ala Satvara | Linga Dekhile Bhumivara | Mani Vikala Jahala ||183|| 

Meaning: Finishing his prayers, Ravana rushed back only to find the Linga on the ground. He was overcome with grief.

Ovi 184: Aveshoni Ravana Dekha | Those Mari Gananayaka | Hasyavadana Rade To Aika | Bhumivari Lolatase ||184|| 

Meaning: In a fit of rage, Ravana struck Ganesha. The boy, who was actually the Lord, began to cry and rolled on the ground.

Ovi 185: Mhene Majhiya Pitayasi | Sangen Ata Twaritesi | Ka Marile Maja Balakasi | Mhononi Radat Nighala Dekha ||185|| 

Meaning: "I will tell my father that you hit an innocent child!" cried the boy as he ran away.

Ovi 186: Maga Ravana Kaya Kari | Linga Dharonia Druda Kari | Uchalu Gela Nanapari | Bhumisahita Halatase ||186|| 

Meaning: Ravana then tried to lift the Linga with all his strength. He pulled and tugged, but the entire Earth shook along with it.

Ovi 187: Kape Dharani Taye Veli | Ravana Uchali Mahabali | Na Ye Linga Shira Aphali | Mahabali Rahila ||187|| 

Meaning: The Earth trembled as the mighty Ravana tried to uproot it. When it wouldn't move, he began hitting his own head in despair.

Ovi 188: Nama Pavila Yachi Karane | Mahabaleshwara Linga Jane | Muradoni Odhita Ravane | Gokarnakara Jahale ||188|| 

Meaning: Because of the immense strength used to pull it, it was named Mahabaleshwar. Because Ravana twisted it while pulling, it took the shape of a cow's ear (Gokarna).

Ovi 189: Aise Karita Lankanatha | Maguti Gela Tapartha | Khyati Jhali Gokarnant | Samasta Deva Tethe Ale ||189|| 

Meaning: After this, Ravana went back to perform penance. Gokarna became famous, and all the gods descended there to worship.

Ovi 190: Anika Ase Apara Mahima | Sangatase Anupama | Skandapurana Varnili Sima | Prakhyada Ase Pariyēsa ||190|| 

Meaning: The greatness of this place is boundless and unique, as described in the Skanda Purana.

Ovi 191: Aikoni Siddhache Vachana | Namadharaka Santoshon | Punarapi Charana Lage Jana | Mhene Saraswati Gangadharu ||191||

 Meaning: Hearing Siddha's words, Namadharaka was filled with joy and again bowed at his feet. Thus says Saraswati Gangadhar.
