Ovi 1: नामधारक शिष्यराणा । लागे सिद्धाचिया चरणा । विनवीतसे भाकूनि करुणा । भक्तिभावेकरोनि ॥ १||
Transliteration: Namadharka shishyarana | lage siddhachiya charana | vinavitase bhakuni karuna | bhaktibhavekaroni || 1||
Meaning: The chief among disciples, Namadharaka, bowed at the feet of the Siddha and, filled with devotion and compassion, made a humble plea.
अर्थ: शिष्यांमध्ये श्रेष्ठ असलेला नामधारक सिद्धांच्या चरणांना वंदन करून भक्तीभावाने प्रार्थना करू लागला.
Ovi 2: म्हणे स्वामी सिद्धमुनि । पूर्वकथानुसंधानी । पतीसह सुवासिनी । आली श्रीगुरुसमागमे ॥ २ ||
Transliteration: Mhane swami siddhamuni | purvakathanusandhani | patisaha suvasini | ali shrigurusagame || 2 ||
Meaning: He said, "O Lord Siddha Muni, following the previous narration, the woman, along with her (revived) husband, came into the presence of Shri Guru."
अर्थ: तो म्हणाला, "हे स्वामी सिद्धमुनी, आधीच्या कथेच्या संदर्भाप्रमाणे ती स्त्री आपल्या जिवंत झालेल्या पतीसह श्रीगुरूंकडे आली."
Ovi 3: श्रीगुरु आले मठासी । पुढे कथा वर्तली कैसी । विस्तारोनि कृपेसी । निरोपावी स्वामिया ॥ ३ ||
Transliteration: Shriguru ale mathasi | pudhe katha vartali kaisi | vistaroni krupesi | niropavi swamiya || 3||
Meaning: "After Shri Guru returned to the monastery, what happened next? O Lord, please narrate it to me in detail with your grace."
अर्थ: "श्रीगुरू मठात परतल्यावर पुढे काय घडले, ते कृपया मला सविस्तर सांगा."
Ovi 4: सिद्ध म्हणे ऐक बाळा । दुजे दिनी प्रातःकाळी । दंपत्ये दोघे गुरूजवळी । येवोन बैसती वंदोन ॥ ४||
Transliteration: Siddha mhane aika bala | duje dini pratahkali | dampatye doghe gurujavali | yevona baisati vandona || 4||
Meaning: Siddha said, "Listen, my child. The next morning at dawn, the couple came and sat near Shri Guru after bowing to Him."
अर्थ: सिद्ध म्हणाले, "बाळा ऐक, दुसऱ्या दिवशी सकाळी ते पती-पत्नी श्रीगुरूंना वंदन करून त्यांच्यासमोर बसले."
Ovi 5: विनविताती कर जोडोनि । आम्हा शोक घडल्या दिनी । एके यतीने येवोनि । बुद्धिवाद सांगितला ॥ ५||
Transliteration: Vinavitati kara jodoni | amha shoka ghadalya dini | eke yatine yevoni | buddhivada sangitala || 5||
Meaning: With folded hands, they pleaded, "O Lord, on the day we were struck by the grief (of death), an ascetic (Yati) came and gave us wise counsel."
अर्थ: त्यांनी हात जोडून विनंती केली, "स्वामी, ज्या दिवशी आम्हाला पतीच्या मृत्यूचे दुःख झाले, त्या दिवशी एका यतीने (योगेश्वराने) येऊन आम्हाला उपदेश केला."
Ovi 6: रुद्राक्ष चारी आम्हासी । देता बोलिला परियेसी । कानी बांधोनि प्रेतासी । दहन करा म्हणितले ॥ ६||
Transliteration: Rudraksha chari amhasi | deta bolila pariyesi | kani bandhoni pretasi | dahana kara mhanitale || 6||
Meaning: "He gave us four Rudrakshas and told us to listen carefully: 'Tie these to the ears of the corpse before performing the cremation,' he said."
अर्थ: "त्यांनी आम्हाला चार रुद्राक्ष दिले आणि सांगितले की, दोन रुद्राक्ष प्रेताच्या कानाला बांधून मग दहन करा."
Ovi 7: आणिक एक बोलिले । रुद्रसूक्त असे भले । अभिषेकिती विप्रकुळे । ते तीर्थ आणावे ॥ ७||
Transliteration: Anika eka bolile | rudrasukta ase bhale | abhishekhiti viprakule | te tirtha anave || 7||
Meaning: "He further said that where the Brahmins are performing anointing (Abhisheka) with the sacred Rudra-sukta, one should bring that holy water (Tirtha)."
अर्थ: "त्यांनी असेही सांगितले की, जिथे ब्राह्मण रुद्रसूक्त म्हणून श्रीगुरूंच्या चरणांवर अभिषेक करत असतील, ते तीर्थ घेऊन यावे."
Ovi 8: आणोनिया प्रेतावरी । प्रोक्षा तुम्ही भावे करी । दर्शना जावे सत्वरी । श्रीनृसिंहसरस्वती स्वामीचे ॥ ८||
Transliteration: Anonniya pretavari | proksha tumhi bhave kari | darshana jave satvari | shrinrusinhasaraswati swamiche || 8||
Meaning: "Bring that holy water and sprinkle it with devotion upon the corpse, and then immediately go for the Darshana of Lord Shri Nrusimha Saraswati."
अर्थ: "ते तीर्थ प्रेतावर शिंपडून लगेच श्रीनृसिंह सरस्वती स्वामींच्या दर्शनाला जावे."
Ovi 9: ऐसे सांगोनि आम्हांसी । आपण गेला परियेसी । रुद्राक्ष राहिले मजपासी । पतिश्रवणी स्वामिया ॥ ९||
Transliteration: Aise sangoni amhansi | apana gela pariyesi | rudraksha rahile majapasi | patishravani swamiya || 9||
Meaning: "After telling us this, he departed. Those Rudrakshas are still with me and in my husband's ears, O Lord."
अर्थ: "असे सांगून ते निघून गेले. ते रुद्राक्ष अजूनही माझ्याकडे आणि पतीच्या कानात आहेत."
Ovi 10: ऐकोनि तियेचे वचन । श्रीगुरु सांगती हासोन । रुद्राक्ष दिल्हे आम्ही जाण । तव भक्ति देखोनिया ॥ १०||
Transliteration: Aikoni tiyeche vachana | shriguru sangati hasona | rudraksha dilhe amhi jana | tava bhakti dekhoniya || 10||
Meaning: Hearing her words, Shri Guru said with a smile, "Know that it was I who gave those Rudrakshas to you, seeing your great devotion."
अर्थ: तिचे बोलणे ऐकून श्रीगुरू हसून म्हणाले, "तुझी भक्ती पाहून ते रुद्राक्ष आम्हीच तुला दिले होते." (योगेश्वर दुसरे कोणी नसून श्रीगुरूच होते).
Ovi 11: भक्ति अथवा अभक्तीसी । रुद्राक्ष धारण करणारासी । पापे न लागती परियेसी । उंच अथवा नीचाते ॥ ११||
Transliteration: Bhakti athava abhaktisi | rudraksha dharana karanarasi | pape na lagati pariyesi | uncha athava nichate || 11||
Meaning: "Whether worn with devotion or without it, sins do not touch the one who wears Rudraksha, regardless of whether they are of high or low birth."
अर्थ: "रुद्राक्ष भक्तीने किंवा चुकूनही धारण केले तरी, माणसाला पापे लागत नाहीत, मग तो उच्च असो वा नीच."
Ovi 12: रुद्राक्षांचा महिमा । सांगितला अनुपमा । सांगेन विस्तारून तुम्हा । एकचित्ते परियेसा ॥ १२||
Transliteration: Rudrakshancha mahima | sangitala anupama | sangena vistaruna tumha | ekachitte pariyesa || 12||
Meaning: "The greatness of Rudraksha is incomparable. I shall narrate it to you in detail; listen with a focused mind."
अर्थ: "रुद्राक्षाचा महिमा अफाट आहे, तो आता मी तुम्हाला विस्तारपूर्वक सांगतो, लक्ष देऊन ऐका."
Ovi 13: रुद्राक्षधारणे पुण्य । मिति नाही अगण्य । आणिक नाही देवास मान्य । श्रुतिसंमत परियेसा ॥ १३||
Transliteration: Rudrakshadharane punya | miti nahi aganya | anika nahi devasa manya | shrutisammata pariyesa || 13||
Meaning: "The merit (Punya) gained by wearing Rudraksha is immeasurable and countless. It is most dear to the Gods and is endorsed by the Vedas."
अर्थ: "रुद्राक्ष धारण केल्याने मिळणारे पुण्य मोजता येत नाही. देवालाही हे अत्यंत मान्य आहे."
Ovi 14: सहस्त्रसंख्या जो नर । रुद्राक्षमाळा करी हार । स्वरूपे होय तोचि रुद्र । समस्त देव वंदिती ॥ १४||
Transliteration: Sahastrasankhya jo nara | rudrakshamala kari hara | swarupe hoya tochi rudra | samasta deva vanditi || 14||
Meaning: "A man who wears a thousand Rudrakshas as a garland becomes the very form of Lord Rudra, and all the Gods bow to him."
अर्थ: "जो मनुष्य एक हजार रुद्राक्ष धारण करतो, तो साक्षात रुद्राचे रूप बनतो आणि सर्व देव त्याला वंदन करतात."
Ovi 15: सहस्त्र जरी न साधती । दोही बाही षोडशती । शिखेसी एक ख्याति । चतुर्विशति दोही करी ॥ १५||
Transliteration: Sahastra jari na sadhati | dohi bahi shodashati | shikhesi eka khyati | chaturvishati dohi kari || 15||
Meaning: "If a thousand are not possible, one should wear sixteen on each arm, one on the tuft of hair (Shikha), and twenty-four on each wrist."
अर्थ: "हजार शक्य नसतील, तर दोन्ही दंडांवर १६-१६, शिखेला १ आणि दोन्ही मनगटांवर २४-२४ रुद्राक्ष बांधावेत."
Ovi 16: कंठी बांधा बत्तीस । मस्तकी बांधा चत्वारिंश । श्रवणद्वयी द्वादश । धारण करावे परियेसा ॥ १६||
Transliteration: Kanthi bandha battisa | mastaki bandha chatvarinsha | shravanadvayi dwadasha | dharana karave pariyesa || 16||
Meaning: "Wear thirty-two around the neck, forty on the head, and twelve in each of the two ears."
अर्थ: "गळ्यात ३२, डोक्यावर ४० आणि दोन्ही कानांत १२-१२ रुद्राक्ष धारण करावेत."
Ovi 17: कंठी अष्टोत्तरशत एक । माळा करा सुरेख । रुद्रपुत्रसमान ऐक । येणे विधी धारण केलिया ॥ १७||
Transliteration: Kanthi ashtottarashata eka | mala kara surekha | rudraputrasamana aika | yene vidhi dharana keliya || 17||
Meaning: "If one wears a beautiful garland of one hundred and eight Rudrakshas around the neck, he becomes like the son of Lord Rudra."
अर्थ: "गळ्यात १०८ रुद्राक्षांची माळ घातल्यास तो मनुष्य शिवपुत्राप्रमाणे होतो."
Ovi 18: मोती पोवळी स्फटिकेसी । रौप्य वैडूर्य सुवर्णेसी । मिळोनि रुद्राक्षमाळेसी । करावे धारण परियेसा ॥ १८||
Transliteration: Moti povali sphatikesi | raupya vaidurya suvarnesi | miloni rudrakshamalesi | karave dharana pariyesa || 18||
Meaning: "One should wear Rudrakshas combined with pearls, corals, crystals, silver, cat's eye gems, or gold."
अर्थ: "मोती, पोवळे, स्फटिक, चांदी किंवा सोन्यासोबत रुद्राक्ष गुंफून धारण करावेत."
Ovi 19: याचे फळ असे अपार । रुद्राक्षमाला अति थोर । जे मिळती समयानुसार । रुद्राक्ष धारण करावे ॥ १९||
Transliteration: Yache phala ase apara | rudrakshamala ati thora | je milati samayanusara | rudraksha dharana karave || 19||
Meaning: "The fruit of this is infinite; the Rudraksha garland is truly great. One should wear Rudrakshas as they become available over time."
अर्थ: "याचे फळ मोठे आहे. जसे उपलब्ध होतील तसे रुद्राक्ष जरूर धारण करावेत."
Ovi 20: ज्याचे गळा रुद्राक्ष असती । त्यासी पापे नातळती । तया होय सद्गति । रुद्रलोकी अखंडित ॥ २०||
Transliteration: Jyache gala rudraksha asati | tyasi pape nataltii | taya hoya sadgati | rudraloki akhandita || 20||
Meaning: "Sins do not touch the one who has Rudrakshas around his neck. He attains salvation and an eternal place in the world of Rudra (Shiva-loka)."
अर्थ: "ज्याच्या गळ्यात रुद्राक्ष असतात, त्याला पाप स्पर्श करत नाही आणि त्याला शिवलोकात कायमचे स्थान मिळते."
Ovi 21: रुद्राक्षमाळा धरोनि । जप करिती अनुष्ठानी । अनंत फळ असे जाणी । एकचित्ते परियेसा ॥ २१||
Transliteration: Rudrakshamala dharoni | japa kariti anushthani | ananta phala ase jani | ekachitte pariyesa || 21||
Meaning: "Chanting (Japa) or performing rituals while holding a Rudraksha garland yields infinite results; listen with concentration."
अर्थ: "रुद्राक्षाच्या माळेवर जप केल्यास अनंत पटीने फळ मिळते."
Ovi 22: रुद्राक्षाविणे जो नर । वृथा जन्म जाणा घोर । ज्याचे कपाळी नसे त्रिपुंड्र । जन्म वाया परियेसा ॥ २२||
Transliteration: Rudrakshavine jo nara | vrutha janma jana ghora | jyache kapali nase tripundra | janma vaya pariyesa || 22||
Meaning: "Know that the life of a man without Rudraksha is terrible and in vain. He who does not have the Tripundra (three lines of ash) on his forehead, his birth is wasted."
अर्थ: "ज्याने कधी रुद्राक्ष घातले नाहीत आणि कपाळाला भस्माचा त्रिपुंड्र लावला नाही, त्याचा जन्म वाया गेला समजावा."
Ovi 23: रुद्राक्ष बांधोनि मस्तकेसी । अथवा दोन्ही श्रवणांसी । स्नान करिता नरासी । गंगास्नानफळ असे ॥ २३||
Transliteration: Rudraksha bandhoni mastakesi | athava donhi shravanansi | snana karita narasi | gangasnanaphala ase || 23||
Meaning: "A man who bathes while having Rudrakshas tied to his head or both ears gains the merit of bathing in the Ganges."
अर्थ: "डोक्यावर किंवा कानाला रुद्राक्ष बांधून स्नान केल्यास गंगास्नानाचे पुण्य मिळते."
Ovi 24: रुद्राक्ष ठेवोनि पूजेसी । अभिषेक करावा श्रीरुद्रेसी । लिंगपूजा समानेसी । फळ असे निर्धारा ॥ २४||
Transliteration: Rudraksha thevoni pujesi | abhisheka karava shrirudresi | lingapuja samanesi | phala ase nirdhara || 24||
Meaning: "By placing a Rudraksha in worship and performing anointing (Abhisheka) with the Shri Rudram, one surely gets the same fruit as worshipping a Shiva-linga."
अर्थ: "रुद्राक्षाची पूजा करून त्यावर रुद्राभिषेक केल्यास शिवलिंगाच्या पूजेइतकेच फळ मिळते."
Ovi 25: एकमुख पंचमुख । एकादश असती मुख । चतुर्दशादि कौतुक । मुखे असती परियेसा ॥ २५||
Transliteration: Ekamukha panchamukha | ekadasha asati mukha | chaturdashadi kautuka | mukhe asati pariyesa || 25||
Meaning: "Rudrakshas have one face, five faces, or eleven faces. Wonderfully, they even have fourteen or more faces."
अर्थ: "रुद्राक्ष १ ते १४ मुखी किंवा त्याहीपेक्षा जास्त मुखांचे असतात."
Ovi 26: हे उत्तम मिळती जरी । अथवा असती नानापरी । धारण करावे प्रीतिकरी । पावे चतुर्विध पुरुषार्थ ॥ २६||
Transliteration: He uttama milati jari | athava asati nanapari | dharana karave pritikari | pave chaturvidha purushartha || 26||
Meaning: "Whether they are of the best quality or of various other types, one should wear them with love to attain the four goals of life (Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha)."
अर्थ: "ते कोणत्याही प्रकारचे असले तरी श्रद्धेने धारण केल्यास धर्म, अर्थ, काम आणि मोक्ष हे चारही पुरुषार्थ प्राप्त होतात."
Ovi 27: याचे पूर्वील आख्यान । विशेष असे अति गहन । ऐकता पापे पळोन । जाती त्वरित परियेसा ॥ २७||
Transliteration: Yache purvila akhyana | vishesha ase ati gahana | aikata pape palona | jati tvarita pariyesa || 27||
Meaning: "There is an ancient legend about this, which is very profound. By listening to it, sins flee away instantly."
अर्थ: "या संदर्भात एक प्राचीन आणि गहन कथा आहे, जी ऐकल्याने सर्व पापे नष्ट होतात."
Ovi 28: राजा काश्मीरदेशासी । भद्रसेन नामे परियेसी । त्याचा पुत्र सुधर्म नामेसी । प्रख्यात असे अवधारा ॥ २८||
Transliteration: Raja kashmiradeshasi | bhadrasena name pariyesi | tyacha putra sudharma namesi | prakhyata ase avadhara || 28||
Meaning: "There was a king in the land of Kashmir named Bhadrasena. His son, named Sudharma, was very famous; listen to this."
अर्थ: "काश्मीर देशात भद्रसेन नावाचा राजा होता आणि सुधर्म नावाचा त्याचा प्रसिद्ध पुत्र होता."
Ovi 29: त्या राजाचा मंत्रीसुत । नाम तारक विख्यात । दोघे कुमार ज्ञानवंत । परमसखे असति देखा ॥ २९||
Transliteration: Tya rajacha mantrisuta | nama taraka vikhyata | doghe kumara jnyanavanta | paramasakhe asati dekha || 29||
Meaning: "The son of that king's minister was the famous Taraka. Both the young boys were wise and were the closest of friends."
अर्थ: "राजाचा मुलगा सुधर्म आणि मंत्र्याचा मुलगा तारक हे दोघे मित्र अत्यंत हुशार आणि एकमेकांचे जीवश्चकंठश्च मित्र होते."
Ovi 30: उभयता एके वयासी । एके स्थानी विद्याभ्यासी । क्रीडा विनोद अति प्रीतींसी । वर्तती देखा संतोषे ॥ ३०||
Transliteration: Ubhayata eke vayasi | eke sthani vidyabhyasi | krida vinoda ati pritinsi | vartati dekha santoshe || 30||
Meaning: "Both were of the same age, studied at the same place, and spent their time in sports and humor with great affection and joy."
अर्थ: "दोघे एकाच वयाचे होते, एकाच ठिकाणी शिकले आणि आनंदाने खेळायचे."
Ovi 31: क्रीडास्थानी सहभोजनी । असती दोघे संतोषोनि । ऐसे कुमार महाज्ञानी । शिवभजक परियेसा ॥ ३१||
Transliteration: Kridasthani sahabhojani | asati doghe santoshoni | aise kumara mahajnyani | shivabhajaka pariyesa || 31||
Meaning: "Whether on the playground or dining together, they were always happy. These two wise princes were devoted worshippers of Lord Shiva."
अर्थ: "ते एकत्र जेवायचे आणि खेळायचे. हे दोन्ही राजपुत्र साक्षात शिवभक्त होते."
Ovi 32: सर्वदेहा अलंकार । रुद्राक्षमाळा सुंदर । भस्मधारण त्रिपुंड्र । टिळा असे परियेसा ॥ ३२||
Transliteration: Sarvadeha alankara | rudrakshamala sundara | bhasmadharana tripundra | tila ase pariyesa || 32||
Meaning: "Their ornaments for the entire body were beautiful Rudraksha garlands, and they wore the Tripundra (three horizontal lines) of sacred ash on their foreheads."
अर्थ: "त्यांच्या अंगावर दागिन्यांऐवजी रुद्राक्षमाळा असायच्या आणि कपाळावर भस्माचे तीन पट्टे (त्रिपुंड्र) असायचे."
Ovi 33: रत्नाभरणे सुवर्ण । लेखिती लोहासमान । रुद्रमाळावाचून । न घेती देखा अलंकार ॥ ३३||
Transliteration: Ratnabharane suvarna | lekhiti lohasamana | rudramalavachuna | na gheti dekha alankara || 33||
Meaning: "They regarded jeweled ornaments and gold as mere iron. They would not accept any ornament other than the Rudraksha garland."
अर्थ: "ते हिरे, दागिने आणि सोन्याला लोखंडासारखे लेखायचे. रुद्राक्षाशिवाय इतर कोणताही अलंकार त्यांना आवडत नसे."
Ovi 34: मातापिता बंधुजन । आणोनि देती रत्नाभरण । टाकोनि देती कोपोन । लोह पाषाण म्हणती त्यांसी ॥ ३४||
Transliteration: Matapita bandhujana | anoni deti ratnabharana | takoni deti kopona | loha pashana mhanati tyansi || 34||
Meaning: "When their parents or kinsmen brought them jeweled ornaments, they would throw them away in anger, calling them iron and stones."
अर्थ: "आई-वडिलांनी दागिने दिले तर ते रागाने फेकून द्यायचे आणि त्यांना लोखंड किंवा दगड म्हणायचे."
Ovi 35: वर्तता ऐसे एके दिवशी । तया राजमंदिरासी । आला पराशर ऋषि । जो का त्रिकाळज्ञ असे देखा ॥ ३५||
Transliteration: Vartata aise eke divashi | taya rajamandirasi | ala parashara rushi | jo ka trikalajnya ase dekha || 35||
Meaning: "While things were going on like this, one day the sage Parashara, who was a knower of the past, present, and future, came to that royal palace."
अर्थ: "एकदा राजवाड्यात पराशर ऋषी आले, जे भूत, भविष्य आणि वर्तमान जाणणारे होते."
Ovi 36: ऋषि आला देखोन । राजा संमुख जाऊन । साष्टांगी नमन करून । अभिवंदिला तये वेळी ॥ ३६||
Transliteration: Rushi ala dekhona | raja sanmukha jauna | sashtangi namana karuna | abhivandila taye veli || 36||
Meaning: "Seeing the arrival of the sage, the king went forward to meet him, performed a prostration (Sashtanga Namaskara), and greeted him."
अर्थ: "ऋषींचे आगमन पाहून राजाने सामोरे जाऊन त्यांना साष्टांग नमस्कार केला."
Ovi 37: बैसवोनि सिंहासनी । अर्घ्य पाद्य देवोनि । पूजा केली विधानी । महानंदे तये वेळी ॥ ३७||
Transliteration: Baisavoni sinhasani | arghya padya devoni | puja keli vidhani | mahanande taye veli || 37||
Meaning: "Seating him on the throne and offering Arghya and Padya (water for hands and feet), the king performed the ritual worship with great joy."
अर्थ: "त्यांना सिंहासनावर बसवून विधीपूर्वक पूजा केली."
Ovi 38: कर जोडोनि मुनिवरासी । विनवी राव भक्तीसी । पिसे लागले पुत्रांसी । काय करावे म्हणतसे ॥ ३८||
Transliteration: Kara jodoni munivarasi | vinavi rava bhaktisi | pise lagale putransi | kaya karave mhanatase || 38||
Meaning: "With folded hands, the king pleaded to the great sage with devotion, 'My son seems to have been possessed by a madness; what should I do?'"

Meaning: "Seeing the gem-studded Linga, the courtesan was amazed and said to her friend, 'I must have such an object.'"

Ovi 61: पुसावे तया वैश्यासी । जरी देईल मौल्येसी । अथवा देईल रतीसी । होईन कुलस्त्री तीन दिवस ॥ ६१||

Meaning: "'Ask that merchant if he will give it for a price, or if he will give it for pleasure, I will be his devoted wife for three days.'"

Meaning: "At that moment, the courtesan placed her hand on the Linga, and with the sun and moon as witnesses, she became his wife."
अर्थ: "त्या वेश्येने शिवलिंगावर हात ठेवून, चंद्र-सूर्याला साक्षी ठेवून तीन दिवसांसाठी त्याची पत्नी होण्याचे मान्य केले."
Ovi 73: इतुकिया अवसरी । लिंग दिले तियेचे करी । संतोष जहाली ती नारी । करी कंकण बांधिले ॥ ७३||

Meaning: "At that opportunity, he placed the Linga in her hand. The woman was delighted and tied a sacred thread (Kankana) on her wrist."

Meaning: "After giving the Linga to the courtesan, the merchant said, 'Listen, know that this Linga is as dear to me as my very life.'"

Ovi 75: या कारणे लिंगासी । जतन करणे परियेसी । हानि होता यासी । प्राण आपुला देईन ॥ ७५||

Ovi 81: अग्नि लागता मंडप । भस्म झाला जैसा धूप । वैश्य करितसे प्रलाप । देखोनि तये वेळी ॥ ८१||
Transliteration: Agni lagata mandapa | bhasma jhala jaisa dhupa | vaishya karitase pralapa | dekhoni taye veli || 81||
Meaning: As the fire caught, the pavilion turned to ashes like incense. Seeing this, the merchant began to wail loudly at that time.
अर्थ: संपूर्ण मंडप जळून खाक झाला. हे पाहून व्यापारी मोठ्याने आक्रोश करू लागला.
Ovi 82: म्हणे हा हा काय झाले । माझे प्राणलिंग गेले । विझविताती अतिप्रबळे । नगरलोक मिळोनि ॥ ८२||
Transliteration: Mhane ha ha kaya jhale | majhe pranalinga gele | vijhavitati atiprabale | nagaraloka miloni || 82||
Meaning: He cried, "Alas! What has happened? My Life-Linga is gone!" The townspeople gathered together and tried their best to extinguish the fire.
अर्थ: "माझे प्राणलिंग आगीत भस्म झाले!" असे म्हणून तो रडू लागला. नगरातील लोकांनी आग विझवली.
Ovi 83: विझवूनिया पहाती लिंगासी । दग्ध झाले परियेसी । अग्नी कुक्कुटमर्कटांसी । दहन जहाले परियेसा ॥ ८३||

Meaning: After putting out the fire, they looked for the Linga, but it was burnt. The rooster and the monkey were also consumed by the fire; listen.
अर्थ: आग विझवून पाहिले तर ते लिंग जळून गेले होते आणि तिथे असलेले माकड व कोंबडाही जळून मृत झाले होते.
Ovi 84: वैश्य देखोनि तये वेळी । दुःख करी अतिप्रबळी । प्राणलिंग गेले जळोनि । आता प्राण त्यजीन म्हणे ॥ ८४||
Transliteration: Vaishya dekhoni taye veli | duhkha kari atiprabali | pranalinga gele jaloni | ata prana tyajina mhane || 84||
Meaning: Seeing this, the merchant felt intense grief. "My Life-Linga is burnt; now I shall give up my life," he said.
अर्थ: "माझे लिंग गेले, आता जगून काय फायदा?" असे म्हणून व्यापाऱ्याने स्वतःचे प्राण देण्याचे ठरवले.
Ovi 85: म्हणोनिया निघाला बाहेरी । आयती केली ते अवसरी । काष्ठे मिळवोन अपारी । अग्नि केला परियेसा ॥ ८५||
Transliteration: Mhanoniya nighala baheri | ayati keli te avasari | kashthe milavona apari | agni kela pariyesa || 85||
Meaning: Saying so, he went outside. He gathered a vast amount of wood and prepared a fire (pyre) at that moment.
अर्थ: त्याने बाहेर जाऊन सरपण गोळा केले आणि मोठी चिता रचली.
Ovi 86: लिंग दग्ध झाले म्हणत । अग्निप्रवेश केला त्वरित । नगरलोक विस्मय करीत । वेश्या दुःख करीतसे ॥ ८६||
Transliteration: Linga dagdha jhale mhanata | agnipravesha kela tvarita | nagaraloka vismaya karita | veshya duhkha karitase || 86||
Meaning: Saying that the Linga was burnt, he immediately entered the fire. The townspeople were amazed, and the courtesan was filled with sorrow.
अर्थ: त्याने अग्नीत उडी घेतली. हे पाहून वेश्येला खूप दुःख झाले.
Ovi 87: म्हणे हा हा काय झाले । पुरुषहत्यापाप घडले । लिंग मंडपी ठेविले । दग्ध जहाले परियेसा ॥ ८७||

Meaning: She cried, "Alas! What has happened? The sin of a man's death has occurred. The Linga kept in the pavilion is also burnt."
अर्थ: तिला वाटले की आपल्यामुळे पतीचा (व्यापाऱ्याचा) मृत्यू झाला आणि लिंगही जळाले.
Ovi 88: वैश्य माझा प्राणेश्वर । तया हानि जहाली निर्धार । पतिव्रताधर्मे सत्वर । प्राण त्यजीन म्हणतसे ॥ ८८||
Transliteration: Vaishya majha praneshvara | taya hani jahali nirdhara | pativratadharme satvara | prana tyajina mhanatase || 88||
Meaning: "The merchant was the lord of my life, and he is surely lost. By the duty of a devoted wife, I shall also give up my life immediately," she said.
अर्थ: "हा तीन दिवसांसाठी का असेना, माझा पती आहे. आता मीही पतिव्रता धर्माने सती जाईन."

Meaning: She called the Brahmins, resolved to give away her wealth, and performed acts of charity before following him in death (Sahagamana).

Meaning: She gave clothes and ornaments from her treasury to the noble Brahmins. A pile of sandalwood was prepared and the fire was lit.
अर्थ: तिने वस्त्राभरणे आणि भांडार ब्राह्मणांना अर्पण केले. चंदनाच्या लाकडांची चिता रचून अग्नी प्रज्वलित केला.
Ovi 91: आपुल्या बंधुवर्गासी । नमोनि पुसे तयासी । निरोप द्यावा आपणासी । पतीसवे जातसे ॥ ९१||
Transliteration: Apulya bandhuvargasi | namoni puse tayasi | niropa dyava apanasi | patisave jatase || 91||
Meaning: Bowing to her kinsmen, she asked them for their permission, "Give me your farewell; I am going with my husband."

Ovi 92: ऐकोनि तियेचे वचन । दुःख पावले बंधुजन । म्हणती तुझी बुद्धि हीन । काय धर्म करीतसे ॥ ९२||

Meaning: Hearing her words, her kinsmen were saddened and said, "Your intellect has failed you. What kind of 'Dharma' are you following?"

Ovi 93: वेश्येच्या मंदिरासी । येती पुरुष रतीसी । मिती नाही तयांसी । केवी जहाला तुझा पुरुष ॥ ९३||

Meaning: "Countless men come to a courtesan's house for pleasure. How can he be called your husband?"
अर्थ: "तुझ्याकडे तर रोज अनेक पुरुष येतात, मग हा तुझा पती कसा झाला?"
Ovi 94: कैचा वैश्य कैचे लिंग । वाया जाळिसी आपुले अंग । वारवनिता धर्म चांग । नूतन पुरुष नित्य घ्यावा ॥ ९४||
Transliteration: Kaicha vaishya kaiche linga | vaya jalisi apule anga | varavanita dharma changa | nutana purusha nitya dhyava || 94||
Meaning: "Where is the merchant, and where is the Linga? Why burn your body in vain? The proper duty of a courtesan is to find a new man every day."
अर्थ: "वेडी होऊ नकोस, स्वतःचे शरीर अग्नीत जाळू नकोस. नवीन पुरुष शोध."
Ovi 95: ऐसे वैश्य किती येती । त्यांची कैशी होसी सती । हासती नगरलोक ख्याति । काय तुझी बुद्धि सांगे ॥ ९५||
Transliteration: Aise vaishya kiti yeti | tyanchi kaishi hosi sati | hasati nagaraloka khyati | kaya tujhi buddhi sange || 95||
Meaning: "Many such merchants will come; will you become a 'Sati' for each of them? The townspeople will mock your fame. What is your mind telling you?"
अर्थ: "असे कितीतरी लोक येतील, प्रत्येकासाठी तू सती जाणार का? लोक तुला हसतील."
Ovi 96: येणेपरी सकळ जन । वारिताती बंधुजन । काय केलिया नायकने जाण । कवणाचेही ते काळी ॥ ९६||
Transliteration: Yenepari sakala jana | varitati bandhujana | kaya keliya nayakane jana | kavanachehi te kali || 96||
Meaning: In this way, all the people and kinsmen tried to stop her, but she did not listen to anyone at that time.
अर्थ: सर्वजण तिला अडवत होते, पण तिने कोणाचेही ऐकले नाही.
Ovi 97: वेश्या म्हणे तिये वेळी । आपुला पति वैश्य अढळी । प्रमाण केले तयाजवळी । चंद्र सूर्य साक्षी असे ॥ ९७||
Transliteration: Veshya mhane tiye veli | apula pati vaishya adhali | pramana kele tayajavali | chandra surya sakshi ase || 97||
Meaning: The courtesan said then, "The merchant is my steadfast husband. I have given him my word with the sun and moon as witnesses."
अर्थ: ती म्हणाली, "मी चंद्र-सूर्याला साक्षी ठेवून वचन दिले आहे की मी त्याची पत्नी आहे."
Ovi 98: साक्षी केली म्या हो क्षिति । दिवस तीन अहोरात्री । धर्मकर्म त्याची पत्नी । जाहले आपण परियेसा ॥ ९८||
Transliteration: Sakshi keli mya ho kshiti | divasa tina ahoratri | dharmakarma tyachi patni | jahale apana pariyesa || 98||
Meaning: "I made the earth a witness. For three days and nights, I have become his wife in all religious duties; listen."

Meaning: "A woman who follows her husband in death with love gains the merit of an Ashvamedha sacrifice at every step on the earth."
अर्थ: "सती जाणाऱ्या स्त्रीला प्रत्येक पावलावर अश्वमेध यज्ञाचे पुण्य मिळते."
Ovi 101: आपुल्या माता पिता उद्धरती । एकवीस कुळे पवित्र होती । पतीची जाण तेच रीती । एकवीस कुळे परियेसा ॥ १०१||
Transliteration: Apulya mata pita uddharati | ekavisa kule pavitra hoti | patichi jana techa riti | ekavisa kule pariyesa || 101||
Meaning: "She redeems her parents, and twenty-one generations of her family become pure. Know that the same happens for twenty-one generations of her husband's family."
अर्थ: "तिच्यामुळे दोन्हीकडची ४२ कुळे उद्धरतात."
Ovi 102: इतुके जरी न करिता । पातिव्रत्यपणा वृथा । केवी पाविजे पंथा । स्वर्गाचिया निश्चये ॥ १०२||
Transliteration: Ituke jari na karita | pativratyapana vrutha | kevi pavije pantha | swargachiya nishchaye || 102||
Meaning: "If I do not do this, my devotion as a wife is in vain. How else can I surely attain the path to heaven?"
अर्थ: "जर मी हे केले नाही, तर माझ्या पातिव्रत्याला काही अर्थ उरणार नाही."
Ovi 103: ऐसे पुण्य जोडिती । काय वाचूनि राहणे क्षिती । दुःख संसारसागर ख्याति । मरणे सत्य कधी तरी ॥ १०३||
Transliteration: Aise punya joditi | kaya vachuni rahane kshiti | duhkha sansarasagara khyati | marane satya kadhi tari || 103||
Meaning: "When such merit can be earned, what is the use of living on this earth? This world is a famous ocean of sorrow, and death is certain someday anyway."
अर्थ: "कधी ना कधी मरायचेच आहे, तर असे पुण्य करून का मरू नये?"
Ovi 104: म्हणोनि विनवी सकळांसी । निघाली बाहेर संतोषी । आली अग्निकुंडापासी । नमन करी तये वेळी ॥ १०४||
Transliteration: Mhanoni vinavi sakalansi | nighali bahera santoshi | ali agnikundapasi | namana kari taye veli || 104||
Meaning: Thus pleading with everyone, she went outside happily. She approached the fire-pit and bowed at that time.
अर्थ: सर्वांना नमस्कार करून ती हसतमुखाने अग्निकुंडापाशी आली.
Ovi 105: स्मरोनिया सर्वेश्वर । केला सूर्यासी नमस्कार । प्रदक्षिणे उल्हास थोर । करिती झाली तये वेळी ॥ १०५||
Transliteration: Smaroniya sarveshvara | kela suryasi namaskara | pradakshine ulhasa thora | kariti jhali taye veli || 105||
Meaning: Remembering the Supreme Lord, she bowed to the Sun and performed circumambulations (Pradakshina) with great enthusiasm.
अर्थ: तिने देवाची प्रार्थना केली, सूर्याला नमस्कार केला आणि अग्नीला प्रदक्षिणा घातली.
Ovi 106: नमुनी समस्त द्विजांसी । उभी ठेली अग्निकुंडासी । उडी घातली वेगेसी । अभिनव जहाले तये वेळी ॥ १०६||

Meaning: Bowing to all the Brahmins, she stood by the fire-pit and quickly jumped in. At that moment, a miracle occurred!

Transliteration: Sadashiva panchavaktra | dashabhuja nagasutra | hati ayudhe vichitra | trishula damaru jana pa || 107||
Meaning: Lord Sadashiva, with five faces, ten arms, and a serpent as His sacred thread, appeared holding strange weapons like the trident and the drum.
अर्थ: प्रत्यक्ष पंचमुखी, दशभुज भगवान शंकर तिथे प्रकट झाले.
Ovi 108: भस्मांकित जटाधारी । बैसला असे नंदीवरी । धरिता झाला वरचेवरी । वेश्येशी तये वेळी ॥ १०८||

Meaning: Adorned with ash and matted hair, seated upon Nandi, He caught the courtesan mid-air at that moment.
अर्थ: नंदीवर बसलेल्या महादेवाने तिला आगीतून अलगद वर उचलले.
Ovi 109: तया अग्निकुंडात । न दिसे अग्नि असे शांत । भक्तवत्सल जगन्नाथ । प्रसन्न झाला तये वेळी ॥ १०९||
Transliteration: Taya agnikundata | na dise agni ase shanta | bhaktavatsala jagannatha | prasanna jhala taye veli || 109||
Meaning: In that fire-pit, no fire was seen; it was calm. The Lord of the Universe, who loves His devotees, was pleased then.
अर्थ: तो अग्नी अचानक शांत झाला आणि भगवान शिव तिच्यावर प्रसन्न झाले.
Ovi 110: हाती धरुनी तियेसी । कडे काढी व्योमकेशी । प्रसन्न होउनी परियेसी । वर माग म्हणतसे ॥ ११०||
Transliteration: Hati dharuni tiyesi | kade kadhi vyomakeshi | prasanna houni pariyesi | vara maga mhanatase || 110||
Meaning: Holding her by the hand, Lord Shiva (Vyomakesha) pulled her out and, being pleased, said, "Ask for a boon."
अर्थ: महादेवाने तिचा हात धरून तिला बाहेर काढले आणि विचारले, "वर माग."
Ovi 111: ईश्वर म्हणे तियेसी । आलो तुझे परीक्षेसी । धर्मधैर्य पाहावयासी । येणे घडले परियेसा ॥ १११||
Transliteration: Ishvara mhane tiyesi | alo tujhe parikshesi | dharmanadhairya pahavayasi | yene ghadale pariyesa || 111||
Meaning: The Lord said to her, "I came to test you. This happened so I could see your religious steadfastness and courage."
अर्थ: ईश्वर म्हणाले, "मी तुझी परीक्षा घेण्यासाठीच व्यापाऱ्याचे रूप घेऊन आलो होतो."
Ovi 112: झालो वैश्य आपणची । रत्नलिंग स्वयंभूची । मायाअग्नि केला म्यांची । नाट्यमंडप दग्ध केला ॥ ११२||
Transliteration: Jhalo vaishya apanachi | ratnalinga svayambhuchi | maya-agni kela myanchi | natyamandapa dagdha kela || 112||
Meaning: "I myself became the merchant, and the gem-studded Linga was My own form. I created an illusory fire and burnt the dance pavilion."
अर्थ: "ते रत्नलिं मीच होतो आणि ती आगही माझीच माया होती."
Ovi 113: तुझे मन पहावयासी । जहालो अग्निप्रवेशी । तूची पतिव्रता सत्य होशी । सत्य केले व्रत आपुले ॥ ११३||
Transliteration: Tujhe mana pahavayasi | jahalo agnipraveshi | tuchi pativrata satya hoshi | satya kele vrata apule || 113||
Meaning: "To see your mind, I entered the fire. You are truly a devoted wife; you have kept your vow truly."
अर्थ: "तुझे धैर्य पाहण्यासाठी मी स्वतः अग्नीत प्रवेश केला. तू खरी पतिव्रता आहेस हे सिद्ध झाले."
Ovi 114: संतोषलो तुझे भक्तीसी । देईन वर जो मागसी । आयुरारोग्यश्रियेसी । जे इच्छिसी ते देईन ॥ ११४||
Transliteration: Santoshalo tujhe bhaktisi | deina vara jo magasi | ayurarogyashriyesi | je icchisi te deina || 114||
Meaning: "I am satisfied with your devotion. I will grant whatever boon you ask; I will give you long life, health, and wealth, or whatever you desire."
अर्थ: "मी तुझ्यावर प्रसन्न आहे. तुला जे हवे ते माग."
Ovi 115: म्हणे वेश्या तये वेळी । नलगे वर चंद्रमौळी । स्वर्ग भूमि पाताळी । न घे भोग ऐश्वर्य ॥ ११५||
Transliteration: Mhane veshya taye veli | nalage vara chandramauli | swarga bhumi patali | na ghe bhoga aishvarya || 115||
Meaning: The courtesan said then, "O Lord Chandramauli, I need no boon of heaven, earth, or the netherworld, nor do I want luxuries or power."
अर्थ: वेश्या म्हणाली, "स्वामी, मला स्वर्ग किंवा ऐश्वर्य काहीही नको."
Ovi 116: तुझे चरणकमळी भृंग । होवोनि राहीन महाभाग्य । माझे इष्ट बंधुवर्ग । सकळ तुझे सन्निधेसी ॥ ११६||
Transliteration: Tujhe charanakamali bhrung | hovoni rahina mahabhagya | majhe ishta bandhuvarga | sakala tujhe sannidhesi || 116||
Meaning: "My greatest fortune would be to remain as a bee at Your lotus feet. May all my dear kinsmen also stay near You."
अर्थ: "फक्त तुमच्या चरणांपाशी मला जागा द्या. तसेच माझे नातेवाईक,"
Ovi 117: दासदासी माझे असती । सकळा न्यावे स्वर्गाप्रति । तव सन्निध पशुपति । सर्वदा राहो सर्वेश्वरा ॥ ११७||
Transliteration: Dasadasi majhe asati | sakala nyave swargaprati | tava sannidha pashupati | sarvada raho sarveshvara || 117||
Meaning: "May my servants and all others be taken to heaven. O Pashupati, Lord of All, may we always remain in Your presence."
अर्थ: "दास-दासी आणि जे प्राणी (माकड व कोंबडा) जळाले, त्यांनाही मुक्ती द्या."
Ovi 118: न व्हावी पुनरावृत्ती । न लागे संसार यागायाती । विमोचावे स्वामी त्वरिती । म्हणोनि चरणी लागली ॥ ११८||
Transliteration: Na vhavi punravrutti | na lage sansara yatayati | vimochave swami tvariti | mhanoni charani lagali || 118||
Meaning: "May there be no rebirth, and may I not suffer the toils of this world. O Lord, liberate me quickly," she said, falling at His feet.
अर्थ: "मला आता पुन्हा जन्म नको, या संसारातून कायमची सुटका करा."
Ovi 119: ऐकोनि तियेचे वचन । प्रसन्न झाला गौरीरमण । सकळा विमानी बैसवोन । घेऊन गेला स्वर्गाप्रती ॥ ११९||

Meaning: Hearing her words, Lord Shiva (Gauriramana) was pleased. He seated everyone in a celestial chariot (Vimana) and took them to heaven.

Meaning: In her dance pavilion, the monkey and the rooster also met their end by being burnt; listen.

Ovi 121: म्हणोनि पराशर ऋषि । सांगतसे रायासी । मर्कटजन्म त्यजूनि हर्षी । तुझे उदरी जन्मला ॥ १२१||

Meaning: Therefore, the sage Parashara told the king, "Leaving the form of a monkey, he was joyfully born from your womb (as your son)."
अर्थ: पराशर ऋषी राजाला म्हणाले, "त्या माकडाने तुझ्या पोटी राजपुत्र म्हणून जन्म घेतला."

Transliteration: Purvasanskarakarita | rudrakshadharana kele nitya | itake punya ghadale mhanta | jahale tujhe kumara he || 123||
